I went for the "hifi' rather than HK stereo (so I do have a separate amp in addition to the ASD module, but it isn't an HK one), so pulling the fuse seems to do the trick.

No. The HK is also a separate amp.

That's pretty bad-ass! If only we could do something like that for rev-match...

Where is the ASD module?

I need to unplug and plug back in the ASD cable so is there an easy way to get to it without too much trouble? I have a 2018 M2.

This thread should give you an idea of how to do it:
https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1202389

I did it on my M235i. I never removed the weather stripping around the trunk, it's possible to get the back plate off without doing that step.

ASD coding question

My car has had a series of visits to the dealer to resolve nav/iDrive/USB issues, which are all fixed now. However, nearly every time they do something to the car that involves loading software, they wipe out my personalized settings that I did with Bimmercode. And so I do it again, including disabling the ASD.

I have the M-sport exhaust, factory/port installed.

My point is, I can't tell the difference. Maybe it's because the car is so freakin' loud, that it doesn't matter if ASD is on, or maybe because I'm old and deaf.

Or it's possible that I'm doing it wrong. But it's just that one setting, correct?

ASD is not as bad as people make it out to be. Folks here treat it like chopped liver when you can barely hear it over the vehicle's other natural acoustics i.e. road noise and exhaust drone.

It adds a subtle resounding bass to the interior but you really don't notice it because of how the loud the M2 already is. It's like complaining about getting your hair wet when you're already swimming in the ocean.. So to speak..

Check out the article below and I'll give you a better perspective on how it's implemented in the M2.

ASD was quite intrusive in my M2. I used the ASD bypass harness just for the reasons you said. Any software update wipes out your coding changes.

In the summer of 2016 while my M2 was crossing the ocean, I bought the bypass harness based upon discussions in the forum, but never installed it since the ASD doesn't bother me for the type of driving I do.

I recently turned off ASD with BimmerCode after getting the Remus exhaust. You are right that it's not a night and day difference, at least with an aftermarket exhaust (I also have a FB dp). However I can definitely tell it's off. The best evidence is below 3k rpm there is no longer a fake booming noise at low throttle. At or above 3k the sound is largely unchanged vs with ASD. Also, your stereo will sound much better with ASD off - improves base and highs as well and sounds louder at lower volumes.
I was pleasantly surprised that the car still makes a majority of the previous noises but in a more natural manner.

Everyone's ears will have different sensitivities to different frequencies. I have a sport cat and a valved exhaust that is loud as hell and it doesn't bother me at all, but for some reason I found ASD to be super bothersome, like to the point that would give me headaches. I can only imagine that's what tinnitus feels like. It was a massive relief to get a bypass harness and finally get rid of it for good.

I just coded off ASD after having an adapter and the Bimmercode app for months. My main reason is because some said it made the radio sound better. They were correct, it does sound slightly better, and I can still hear my MPE, though not smothering as it was before.

I could have it either way, and the ASD didn't bother me that much. It is nice to hear that the MPE is what it actually is, not enhanced by the fake sound.

Technics harness is the way to go. Clean (no buzz). I find the difference night and day. I have a stock exhaust. I find the ASD can mask the real sounds and I don't agree it is 3% - I would say 25 to 30% - and it does sound fake IMHO.

After driving my car this weekend, with ASD coded off, I've found that I like it because it didn't change things drastically. My ears must have adjusted, because I can hear my MPE nearly as well as before. I've yet to drive on the highway, so maybe then I'll really notice the difference.

In a factory stock car with standard exhaust, the ASD is definitely noticeable when moving from Comfort to Sport mode. It just adds a constant droning in Sport mode around 3k RPM, sounds like it's coming from under the dash somewhere.... but it's the speakers. Code ASD off and then switching between Comfort and Sport has nearly zero difference in sound.

Okay just wanted to +1 for this being the best ever. Why would anyone want all that fake'ness? I will say, the only thing I was disappointed to miss was the revmatch sound. Can't believe even that was amplified and therefore "fake". Oh well, now I just have to crack the window down a bit to hear it better (or open valves on my MPE, haha)

get a sport cat or catless downpipe and you'll hear it again but this time it'll be real sounds!

This. I got a fabspeed sportcat for the power but man was the sound a nice, unexpected bonus. I have DCT so no rev match, but the growl shriek noises are so much nicer. You can really hear the turbo too.

I turned off my ASD with the bypass cable. It's a nice, elegant solution. This function wasn't part of Bimmercode when I did it back then.

I keep my window at least a little open unless there's a ridiculous downpour.

Read this post and others in the past. All have said that removing a fuse w/the HK audio not only disabled the ASD but also the radio. Yet it seems with other models removing the fuse or unplug the ASD amp does work. Though I am surprised that unplugging the models doesn't record a fault when the car is brought in for service.

I find it strange that pulling a fuse or unplugging the ASD works on so many models, except the M2?
