'Ticking" from engine

Hey guys!

First M Owner, first time posting also!

Picked up my 2020 M2C Last wednesday, took my car out last night and had a spirited drive - nothing over the top, maybe hit max. 5500-6000rpm and when I got back I was showing the engine bay to my friend and noticed that there's a constant ticking sound coming from the engine.

I'm mechanically minded, though not up to date on BMW at all and wasn't sure if it was normal.

Car has 1200km, run in service scheduled for Monday.

Thanks in advance!

Ticking is very vague. Does the engine tick? Yes. But the kind of ticking can indicate what it is. Do you have a video?

Also if you think that your engine might be knocking, knocking sounds like marbles in a tin can. SO it prob isnt that. End of the day if you want peace of mind take it to the dealer.

My 2017 M2 engine always ticked and my 2020 M2C does too. Not sure I would be revving the engine that high when brand new though.

Probably a typo

1200 miles = ~2000km

Your oil is hot and the engine will sound different. You probably just fine.

Some of the fuel injectors make a clicking noise when injecting and this might be more noticeable when hot, the petrol engine with electronic injectors sound awful with the top soundproof pad off

Direct Injection is loud AF and sounds like ass, but it works so well. Every DI car I've had, from multiple manufacturers - at idle you can hear what sounds like an engine needing a valve adjustment. It's definitely a light tick though. Anything heavier sounding isn't the injectors

Sorry to speak out of context but I can't post a new thread....what about a loud ticking noise on cold startup for about 30 seconds. After that it gets dead quiet and drives wonderful. (2018 M2).

I read in multiple forums that such a ticking is usually ok. The dealer also claims it is normal (they usually do).

I am new to the BMW world. My other car is a 2008 WRX so I am used to weird noises as long as they're normal and within reason.

Congrats and welcome!

As far as ticking......to be honest, literally every car I've ever owned ticked after a drive. I figure it's just the car cooling itself down.

I imagine pretty much the only cars that don't tick after a drive are EV's?

Agreed; I didn't go past 5K until after my BIS.

All my cars (or maybe just the BMWs?) tick when parked after a drive.

After further research, it is probably evap valve solenoid and supposedly absolutely normal in case of N54/N55 motors.

As the specialist of engine ticking noises since a couple of weeks , I can only say make a video and let's us hear it here. Within minutes we know what it is.

It is either your injectors or your hydraulic lifters... or maybe something worse. Also be a bit careful. Spirited driving is fine, but keep yours revs at a bit lower level until after 2K km service.
