Hell, I managed to buy a head unit for my last car (a 2009 Lotus Evora) which gave me full capability. |

I have a 2016 also so no CarPlay and I'm actually grateful it's not there. I really had given CarPlay an objective chance in the M340i and I wanted to love it but the APP is so unreliable; it constantly drops in and out connections, sometimes just doesn't load, on startup and doesn't allow for any privacy when you receive a text message. Other than have the ability to mirror Waze, I see very little value in it, especially since the vehicle iDrive interface is already so intuitive to use. The believe the craze with CarPlay is that it looks similar to an iPhone screen, in theory but in practice, it's no where as interactive. I disable it when I hop into any vehicle with CarPlay. It's not the end of world not having it up. However, if you're a glutton for punishment and still want it, there are a few companies that sell retrofit modules to add CarPlay to iD4 EVO units. |

Two thumbs up for kubax86 fullscreen CarPlay code. Worked perfectly as advertised and communication/delivery are first rate. Thanks!

this is the iOS indicator that you are actively screen capturing. in car play that UX mimics itself in the in-car display as well.

Apple CarPlay Not Free on 2020 BMW M2 Competition
Hi all,
I read Marty's post re Apple CarPlay subscription not being free. However, I feel that my story is different enough to start a new thread. I am very close to reaching a deal for an 2020-build M2 Competition. With all the news about the CarPlay being offered for free, I contacted my dealer and asked them to revise their quote and remove the 'unlimited' subscription fee of $450. My dealer told me that they received a bulletin from BMW Australia in regards to CarPlay. It is still a cost option!! Thinking that the dealer must have misunderstood, I rang BMW HQ and spoke with the customer service consultant. The consultant informed me that it is only free for car models running the latest Infotainment system (i.e. iDrive 7). If you are buying a new car, but if it runs older Infotainment system (iDrive 6), the 'activation cost' is $450. So as they put it, revised discounted unlimited subscription is $450. So, Apple CarPlay is free on a AUD$70,000 M135i, but it costs $450 on a AUD$115,000 M2 Competition. That doesn't make sense to me. If BMW is going to offer it for free, do it across the board. The BMW consultant offered to speak with ConnectDrive Manager for Australia to seek clarification. I informed the consultant, it was unpalatable when BMW charged everyone for a feature $25,000 Hyundai offered for free (it is wireless vs wired but I would happily use wired CarPlay). Now that their pricing structure discriminates against vehicles with previous generation ConnectedDrive, it is even more unappetising. I informed the consultant that I will hold off making a purchase of a new vehicle until CarPlay on M2C is offered for free. With plummeting new car sales figures, one would hope that BMW will standardise their pricing across the board. Let's see if I will hear back from them. Plus, IDrive 6 is the pinnacle of in-vehicle interface. IMHO, it's much better than even iDrive 7. I would not want to forgo such a reliable and intuitive setup for CarPlay, as much as I'm an Apple fanatic. It's so weird it doesn't appeal to me. |

You're willing to spend $115,000 on a M2C, but because BMW wants you to spend $450 more for lifetime Apple CarPlay, you won't buy the vehicle anymore...? What's another $450 when you're already spending over 6 figures lol...

BMW Assist confirmed yesterday via phone that CarPlay is now free. I was told customers would receive affirmation within the next 2 weeks.

Yes, perhaps it is illogical of me to reconsider such a purchase based on revised CarPlay pricing. Perhaps, my original post was tarnished by my negativity. No doubt, I will still purchase the M2C.
I would be interested to hear what others think of CarPlay being offered for free on some cars, while others pay. |

Hi Poochie, I'm new to the BMW infotainment system. Am I understanding you correctly here? If a vehicle is equipped with iDrive 6, it has to be updated to iDrive 7 to get CarPlay to work?

For instance, BMW APPs such as Spotify & Pandora in the iDrive 6 is independent from CarPlay. On iDrive 7, BMW APPs no longer exist within the iDrive platform and instead you have to load CarPlay to use any of the BMW APPs. Which requires you to dig into menus upon menus to get to most functions to populate. I get that every new system has a learning curve but it feels like the integration of CarPlay on iDrive 7 is unnecessary complicated. You have to try both to get where I'm coming from but IMHO, newer is not necessarily better. |
