Heads up to anyone running low + wide in the rear

I'm running oem specs on the stock wheels (437m 245/265) but with an agressive drop and 15mm spacers on all 4 corners. I have always rubbed a tiny bit over large dips but made it a point to check the wheels and tires for any signs of wear or damage and never saw any, so I assumed it was just the tire hitting the top of the fender liner. So anyway fast forward to today...I'm having my wheels powder coated and did an inspection of the fenders in the meantime and just noticed this piece of metal exposed in the rear fender wells. I wanted to warn everyone who is running low and wide to make sure to inspect your wheel wells because this could've eventually blown my rear tire(s) and if that happened at speed...well it could've been bad. We ended up getting a dremel and shaved it down a ton. Just happy I noticed sooner than later. Wanted to share my experience so that it doesn't happen to anyone else.

It's one of the reasons I went with the 600, 265, and 10mm in the rear. I didn't want to, I wanted absolute flush, but there are always issues.

Great that you noticed, and did something about it, so no more worries on your rub.

Thanks for sharing, takes courage to admit defeat over stuff - this is incredibly helpful.

No sense in being too proud to admit our mistakes since we learn from them and can help others avoid them. Also, this is potentially life-threatening so it would be super irresponsible to not let others know. Imagine blowing a tire at 100+. Will definitely be reinspecting and monitoring the area in the near future. The trimming should have sorted everything out but if it continues to be a problem I will either raise the car a tad and/or go down a spacer size. Will keep everyone posted as to what happens.

Also to reiterate: this is the rear wheels only. The fronts have 0 issues.

I'd like to see what you did with that Dremel.

Also, do you think 15/12 would be rub-free?

I haven't tried a 15/12 set up so I can't comment on that or make assumptions but I would imagine it would be fine as long as you're not super low. It really depends on your ride height. Sorry for the crappy pics, I asked my mechanic for some but was only able to get a couple sloppy photos. I'll try to snap some myself once I pick the car up sometime next week. Basically, he just shaved a few mm off of the areas in question.

Glad it's being pointed out again that going too low is not that smart. From my experimenting I figured the 295 mm drop in the front and 600 mm in the rear, no spacers, 235/35/19 fronts and 265/35/19 rears, is the absolute low this car should go. (MPC default lowering). Even so, if driven aggressively, if you really push the car, there is still a chance to rub things. When that happens safety is one of the concerns. The other aspect is that the suspension is effectively jammed in those moments and doesn't work like it should.

I think It really depends on the type of suspension and settings you are running. Common sense would suggest you can safely go low if you run something very stiff where there is very little bounce. My height-adjustable springs are pretty bouncy and retain the stock shock absorbers and while they're very comfortable, it definitely doesn't help prevent rubbing. If I were to get good coilovers with stiff springs and were to adjust the rebound and dampening properly I doubt I would have this issue. Since I do not want to do that at this time I have opted to trim the fender liner areas in question and should hopefully be okay from here on out. If the issue persists I will change spacers/raise the car.

Thanks for the info but to help others knowing the drop and the camber helps in the decision process.

*unless oem specs u are referring to is for the camber also.

I think I'm at the max camber settings that OEM will allow but I'm not 100% sure. I don't wrench on my car myself so there are things that I don't know/forget. I'll go ahead and make sure I get a copy of the alignment sheet when I get my newly powdercoated wheels mounted.
