apologies in advance: because my searching skills have failed to turn up an answer, or because I simply can't figure out what search terms to gin up what's been known on here long ago, what does this icon refer to?

I was trying to figure that out too. I just came to the conclusion that it's just indicating that the knob is to change the air conditioning. Just a weird place to put the icon. I would also like to know what that little black thing to the right of the knob is. Looks like a button, but you can't press it.

Pretty sure it just means temperature control. heated seats, rear defroster and front "full blast defrost" buttons all use the same 3 wavy lines.

Owner's manual says it's the interior temp sensor (page 151)
