Front bumper scrape
Although I try to be careful staying away from parking curbs and cement bumpers, I minor scrapped the left lower side of my front bumper on a side curb slowing pulling out of an end parking space.
I wish BMW had put a thin hard rubber-type lip on the underside of the bumper to take any scraps rather than scratching the bumper and paint. Does anyone know of vendors who sells something like this? I'm not looking for a cosmetic carbon fiber type lip, just one for protection. Last edited by RAM_F30_F87; 10-26-2020 at 08:49 PM.. |

Thanks for the two referrals. I plan on meeting with my BMW collision center on Tuesday.
If anyone has tried either on the 2016/2017 M2, please comment on the installation. |

I put scrape armour on our M240 a year ago and looking at the bumper you cant tell it is there. Took about an hour and i had to drill holes. Not a big deal. Works great and i put it on because the garage my wife parks in for work has a dip i was worried about.
I plan on putting it on the M2 once we start driving more, its my understanding it will use the factory bolt pattern for attachment. I don't think holes will be drilled for it. Either way, it was worth the cost for the peace of mind. |

Too late now, but for the future: try to back into parking spaces. The rear of the car has much more height clearance and you have a camera and sensors to aid you. As with any change in life, at first it's tricky and awkward (and hard to remember to do), but once you make it a habit of it it becomes second nature.
I've been doing that for the past ~4 years with my M2 and have yet to sustain any damage while parking (knock on wood). |

Good thought about backing in.
I've always been very conscious around curbs, and thought for sure I had backed out far enough before turning. It probably wouldn't have scrapped, except it was a higher than normal curb in a tight parking lot. I've always backed into my garage using the mirror and backup camera, plus a turn of the head. |

Just underneath, but if he hit it and went over anything it would glide over and cause less damage. It really would depend on where the contact starts.

I have a carbon lip plus my car is lowered so I needed to protect the front edge as well as underside. This is what I use... I've had it on the car about 3 months & it's saved my lip several times already.

Thanks for the feedback.
FYI, I just took the M2 into my BMW dealer's collision center. There was also a more minor underside scratch on the other side that was not easily visible. The cost to repair both to BMW standards (plastic welding, etc.) is estimated to be $1,779.19 (1,528.32 Euro for those on the other side of the pond). The estimate from a body/paint repair shop recommended by a local independent BMW service shop was several hundred less, but they wouldn't be able to work on it for 3-4 weeks. A brand new bumper would be roughly twice the cost. I'm paying for it out of my pocket rather than insurance, but luckily the insurance company recently gave a rebate that was significantly more than the cost. The car goes into 3-month winter storage mid-December and the front bumper will be ceramic coated again after it comes back out since they recommend waiting 45 days after painting. Then I'll look into protection strips. |
