Talking Scrape Armor for M2 Competition

Hey everyone. I am prototyping Scrape Armor for our M2Cs. Wanted to share my results.
Interesting little story first. I was looking for a wheel shop to powder coat my 788Ms (i'll start a different thread, they turned out awesome). While looking at the wheel shop, i found Scrape Armor in the same parking lot (well, it was like 2 lots up). I didn't know they were a local company & had a conversation with the employees who mentioned that they have a kit for the OG M2 but not for the M2C due to the different bumpers.
They asked if I would like to be the prototype, I would bring my car in, they would 3D scan it, then have the templates for the kit.
We did that last week and the kit turned out great!
I attached some photos.
Let me know if you guys have any questions.

So is this kit the same as the M2 one? I emailed them and they said the current M2 kit fits the M2C as well.

No, there are two different kits. Looks like they just updated their website .

Thanks, got my order fixed.

Is there a reason they didn’t go all the way to the edges of the bumper on the sides? Looks like their other kits do that.

I honestly don't know. I would reach out to them for specifics.

Will you clarify if extra holes needed to be drilled? On the webpage it says it utilizes the cars existing bolts.

Thanks.

Yes, you'll need to drill a few extra holes to hold up the front side of the protector. My understanding is that they're pretty small and you can plug them if you take the protector off.

What about protecting the oil cooler? It looks just behind the Scrape Armor.
Are they working on that?
I've heard it's a liability on the M3/M4 and I assume for the M2C as well.

Is it just me or is it a little counterintuitive to spend money and drill holes in your bumper just to protect is from getting scraped?

Yeah that's a good point. I guess I don't understand what's the difference with having scratches on the bottom of your bumper cover vs scratches on the armor on the bottom of your bumper cover? Either way you have scrapes. If the armor was cheap so you could throw it away and replace it when it gets scraped up I could see it but it's not cheap so you end up with scratches under your car either way. Looking at the pictures above I guess the black pieces would hide scratches so they wouldn't be as in your face as black scratches to the white paint. At the end of the day it makes a person feel better about having this I don't see an issue as it's all about what makes you happy.

I think it goes along the lines of simply replacing the parts that get damaged (like the armor) instead of the more expensive parts, like the entire bumper cover. Or let's say you want to sell the car after some time and the armor is scratched up, you could just take the armor off, the potential buyer would see a clean bumper instead of a scratched up one.

I emailed them directly to get some questions answered, here are their replies

The M2 Competition kit doesn’t go to the edge because that area of the car actually curves up, I know those sides look flat in the photos but with the curvature of that area there shouldn’t be any issue with scraping.

Our other BMW kits go to the edge because on those models the front ends were flat, if the M2 Competition front end was the same in that regard the kit shape would have been similar.

Thanks.
Scrape Armor uses the factory fasteners and when needed a few supplemental fasteners that do require a 9/64 pilot hole in conjunction with self-tapping hardware. Yes a few holes were required for mounting as the M2 Competition front end doesn’t feature any front edge hardware.

This mounting method provides the most secure fit which keeps the kit securely fastened in the event of impact and allows us to back the product with our lifetime warranty. Additionally these small pilot holes are much easier to repair and retouch vs any scraping that would occur had the front end gone unprotected.

Reason I would get it is if you have a high likelihood of scraping often.
When they wear down, the company will replace the covers for free.

If the company replaces them for free after they wear down that is very nice. I like to keep my car nice but this forum makes me think I don’t keep it as nice as others. This is another topic for me that is very subjective and a matter of preference. I see a lot of people spend around 1500 on PPF, 500 for bumper guards, and a few hundred for ceramic coating. In reality, they protect against rock chips, scrapes etc. they don’t do anything for major damage. I’ll take my chances and if I have to respray or worst case replace my bumper in the future it would probably still be cheaper.

I'm assuming someone will eventually release some nice quality lower cost front lip options. Might be good alternative. On my last car my lip would scrape/hit parking barriers, but would end up protecting the bumper

Wonder how much additional protection this would provide over just a simple layer or two of XPEL on that part of the bumper.

Well, one is basically a skid plate and the other is a film. If let's say you go over something and it has some some heft to it, I doubt film would protect your bumper like a skid plate would.

If you don't want to spend the money or drill, consider this universal lip protector from Acexxon:

https://ind-distribution.com/collect...-lip-protector

You can attach it directly to the front bumper or to any front lip. When I bought this, the Scrape Armor wasn't available for the M2C yet. I pick up the car this week, and since I already have the Acexxon protector I'm going to try it out.

Are you still in touch with the folks at Scrape Armor? Interested to know if they have a version that would protect an M2C equipped with the M-Performance carbon splitter. Thanks!
