I never understood the hype about 1M. Funny looking car, funny name b/c couldn't call it M1 and now getting handily beat by M2. Please...

Pretty clear that trying to draw any conclusions from this specific video is a worthless endeavor. We know on paper the M2 is faster, as it should be for a model that is 5 years newer.

it's not "hype". Of course the 'new' generation M car will beat the older generation M car in terms of acceleration. Isn't that a given? the 1M is nearly universally adored by anyone who has driven it. it's not about straight line speed. The 1M is all about how it feels to drive...the same reason people love the E30 M3 and 2002 Turbo. Are they fast? No not really.....are they characterful? YES! The 1M is not a perfect car by any means but it has tons and tons of character! In this modern age of less driver oriented tech savvy machines, that is worth its weight in gold.

Handily beat with a very subpar performance; try looking at latest R&T comparo where they rip the 1M for being twitchy, being "outpulled" by M2 and then proceed to have the M2 beat the 1M by .02 seconds on the hot lap! Looks are subjective, but no arguing with what the general car nuts think of this one--if you you ever get a chance to drive one, you'll get lots of comments and never had a negative one. M2 great car, but the table was set by a really fun cobble job; I recommend the VO

A random run on a public road does not prove diddly squat.

I don't remember anyone that could reproduce the 0-60 in 3.9 on the M3.

Man, people on here truly have no basic knowledge of even the most basic variables that factor into a drag race. This outcome is purely do to lack of driver, and has very little to do with the cars in question. If you swap drivers in those two cars then the m1 would have readily won. At the end of the day though, I say run what you brung, and if you brung a crappy driver, too bad for you.
But, this outcome in no way reflects what a drag race between these two cars in stock form would look like between two equal drivers.

Seriously? First it's 1M not M1, and the M2 is faster (regardless of the video). Just look at the Nurburgring time, forget a stupid drag race: M2: 7:58 1M: 8:12

8:15 for 1M (also sportauto carmag) Officially 7:58(BMW) but there also was a 7:52 in it, but because, you know the M3/4 canibalism/marketing they (BMW) kept the official NS time at 7:58. Which is an 'easily' reproducable laptime for M2. BUT 1M is way more connected and involving as a sportscar than any current normal //M car in the lineup incl M2, it's oldskool, and it's not about dragraces. BMW//M is not about dragracing in the first place. Fun isn't around the bend, fun IS the bend, or something like that... Cheers Robin |
