Comparison Photos G87 vs F87

Here is a quick comparison of the real life size differences. The F87 is much smaller in person compared to the G87, especially in width.

I know the G87 guys think these threads are a F87 circle jerk, but the the G87 is simply an awkward design.

I currently own a F87 (actually my second F87) and have owned an E92 and E46 M3, all of which were a much more cohesive design. The E46 and F87 both have a little more aggressive styling than the E92, but all do not have a bad angle.

I guess I need to see one in person?

Im a huge M2 (in general) fan. I love my F87, and was looking forward to the G87 so I could buy some day (there was no doubt in my mind). But I can't get myself to like the looks. I'm sure its otherwise great, but the look of the F87 had me hooked from the minute I saw a picture of it. The G87, not at all...

overstyled and awkward. especially the bumpers.

you probably can't even delete those rear reflectors as the parking sensor is a part of it

There are some days where I really want the G87 and others where I don't. I think I'll probably still add an LCI one down the line to keep next to my F87.

Really great shots.

Don't you know, the F87 is feminine and the G87 is muscular. At least that's what they say...

I don't hate it, and could see myself getting an LCI in future, but like BigKutta said, the F87 was love at first sight. The G87 will take a little getting used to.

I get what BNW was trying to do, but these weren't the bold lines I was looking for. And if you're telling me it's notably bigger in person, oof. If you like the concept, I think the rendering from AutoCar did a better job of evolving the design than what BMW gave us. I gotta have both halfs, so I'll be keeping the F87 for as many miles as it will give me.

Completely agree with this, it’s how I’ve been describing the design of the G80 compared to F80 as well. BMW is doubling down on the aggro and muscular appearance of the M’s. Unapologetic and in your face mean.

The F series M’s still had a beauty side to them. Now it’s full function over form.

On paper, the G87 isn’t much larger, but in person the body of the F87 is much tighter. The fender flares look more pronounced, but the actual body seems to be much narrower. Probably due to the F87 being based off the E82

Probably would have bought a G87 base M2 brand new if it looked even reasonably good but I simply cant get over just how hard they dropped the ball.

I like having a car I can look back at when I'm walking away. The G87 is just disgusting from every angle. Its almost angering, like, how did it go this wrong? How did this make it all the way to production without someone, anyone, saying something?

Give it some time. I don't think the G87 is ever going to reach "That's a great looking BMW!" status, but I think once we've seen a few of them 90 percent of the weirdness will be gone and it'll end up looking like an aggressive, but not particularly beautiful car. Which is fine.

It took me almost a full year, but I finally saw an M240i (G-gen) that looked good. And not just "not-bad" good, but like legitimately "hey that's nice!" good. Now, the M2 will need an LCI update with new front and rear bumpers to get there IMHO, but I can see the current, pre-facelift G87 looking...decent to my eyes at some point. Even though it looks straight up weird to me right now.

it really is not as awkward in real life. The blue is also really nice . Will not be buying one but saw one already and is ok, its super wide in the front, looks much bigger than f87

I walked around a new one for about an hour. For me my opinion didn’t change much. I was never totally offended by the front although would have easily preferred a more traditional and cohesive design there. I’m person it looked as I expected. The side profile is a home run in my opinion. The back which I hated in photos was marginally leas offensive in person but those rocket reflector things are childish. What I loved about M cars is that you could be an adult and drive it and most people could see it was a fancy car but it still kept a level of sophistication and that’s due to their cohesive design. The G87 to me is geared toward a younger last gen type R crowd. That’s frustrating because everything else (new up-market interior, S58, manual, etc) was excellent.

Should add that the rear of the F87 to me was always its weakest view as well (compared to my F80) but it was still ok in my book given how nice the rest is.

Just missing a CS wing or so and a decent diffuser that flows all the way to the wheels. Subtle, but tasteful.

Can't say the G87 is beautiful, but I think it will look aggressive in person. Although I can't call the F87 a true sleeper (like my E39 M5), most people who don't know cars seem to ignore it, which is what I am looking for in a DD. I'm not sure the same will be true for the G87.

Best part of the pix from OP is how different the HS paint looks based on how the light hits it. Great to see them side by side.

Many thanks for posting these great photos. They only solidified my opinion about how much prettier the F87 looks.

Perhaps the G87 is an absolute joy to drive and is an improvement over the F87 performance-wise. But it ain't gonna win any beauty pageants, and coupled with the techy ID8 interior, the F87 could go down as the last of the true classic M cars.

I actually think the much-maligned Zanvoort blue looks pretty good, although not the most masculine color.
