I'm curious about ASD as the previous owner of my 2021 M2C had it coded out.
I tried to code it back in using Bimmercode, but the App was looking for a backup file of ASD (which I didn't have) to bring it back in.

So I guess I have 2 questions:
1) How do you recode ASD with Bimmercode w/out the backup file? (I'd like to experience it to see which camp I fall into)

2) Is ASD only active in the sport modes & not eco-mode? I only use the sport modes when I'm having fun, so a little extra sound is OK in that mode, while cruising in eco-mode I prefer it to be quiet.

Thanks for your thoughts!

I had this exact issue and emailed Bimmercode support and they told me the solution:

use expert mode to reenable the ASD. set “Model range“ to “F87“ and “Engine” to “S55B30”.

No doubt that's a factor. But you also don't have to defend your preference, it's great to have the choice of having it on or off. Tis a shame though that a dongle is required to enable/disable it - should have been a menu item in iDrive IMHO.

I guess I’ll ask. Is there interest in a modified ASD module that would have Bluetooth and allow you to control ASD volume and some basic equalization through a phone app? This would let you dial out some of the drone, or make sport plus a more tolerable level.

Each would require a donor ASD module so it’s probably not going to be super cheap.

You're raising a very interesting point - if ASD is not active in Efficient mode I won’t bother coding it out, but will just stay in this setting for my long highway trips...
Shame that BMW didn’t bother to document it in the user manual !

I'm not sure about efficient mode, but it does seem to be on in comfort. I use my m2 to commute into the office and am typically in comfort mode. With ASD off it's been a more relaxing commute minus the drone on the highway 👍

In the M2, Comfort is Efficient Mode

I was able recode ASD using your instructions.

From what I can tell, ASD is off in eco mode, but active in both sport modes.
The best way to discern this is by choosing sport mode with windows closed at a speed where you hear the exhaust best inside the car. Then quickly cycle to eco mode & you'll distinctly notice the interior exhaust noise drop out.

My initial impression is that I'm happy with ASD in this arrangement. If I'm cruising on the highway, around town or in stop & go traffic I'll be in eco mode and & won't want to listen to the exhaust note (why cruise in sport mode anyway?). However, a little more sound when I'm having some fun in sport mode is great.

I can understand tuning out ASD if you're running an aftermarket exhaust, as the drone from that + ASD would be too much.

ASD is definitely off in Efficient. It's more muted in Sport compared to Sport plus. I don't think it's as artificial sounding in Sport.

^^ I never realized this or I probably would have left it on - 90% of my driving is in Efficient mode. Wouldn't bother me to have the additional sound in the "higher" modes.

Interesting. To my ears, it sounded like ASD is on in comfort as well, just not as noticeable vs sport/+.

In the end, go with what you like. ASD on or off 👍

I finally did the harness this past weekend and I am having a hard time adjusting honestly. After almost 60k miles of having ASD, I’m used to hearing certain feedback through the rpm range. I have AA equal length midepipe + axleback but even so, it’s crazy how quiet the inside seems now.

Some guys really go for fake dual exhausts, hood scoops that you glue to your hood, blue halogen “led look” headlight bulbs, “M package” badging on every other regular BMW and breast implants. I guess if you’re into that sort of thing ASD might appeal … 🤷‍♂️

I can’t stand ASD. My first mod was the bypass harness.

Seems to me the real solution is to strip all the insulation / sound deadening material and swap a NA V8.
Actually fixes two issues.

Is there a reason why people like to turn ASD off by using the wiring harness instead of bimmercode?

I disabled ASD immediately, so I couldn't even tell you what it sounds like. To me, artificial sounds are just blasphemy.

Lol it’s nice to have revived the thread, and I guess I got used to the fake implants coming from a Silverado with exhaust and no valves/deadening.

I appreciate the funny quips, especially from the guy who sold me a m3/4 equal length and then I had to deal with it myself. I think I’m used to music + engine sound in sport+. Either way I don’t think there are many that have 60k miles and can admit the fake sound adds a bit of drama

Yes. With the harness your software can be upgraded and ASD remains off. Also some people don’t like to play with the factory software.

On my F80 changing to sport opens up the valve/damper in the exhaust (more exhaust gas bypass). You can hear the mechanism move if you are just parked and change settings to and from sport. I used to have it coded to stay open even in efficient. Is this not the case in the M2 exhaust?
