I don't think there is anything in BMW's DNA that really defines building that kind of car. There's always a level of extra layers and content that make a BMW a BMW that results in a true 911 or Cayman competitor not fitting. Every indicator is the new Z4 is supremely capable underneath a thick veneer of luxury and numbness.

True, the closest they have ever come in my opinion was the E85/6 Z4 M. Still a nice dream at least...

Z4 base price $48k. Cayman base price $58k. 10k delta gets you better enthusiast experience, but less creature comforts.

I suspect a lot more non enthusiasts would go for Z4 over cayman?

The point I was heading towards is that to get more out of the Z4 it will cost a lot more. I would put the Z4 in a class that's between a cayman and 911 depending on how it's optioned. Kinda sports car, kinda grand touring.

Jack of all, master of none.

Great example! Agree that's probably as close as we've gotten. Pretty reasonable on the used market still, but well on the way up on values.

Exactly why I got one, they are reasonably priced for the moment (the roadster at least, coupe is more expensive). As for Z3 M that was also great, all be it a little less composed, but the Coupe version (aka Clownshoe) has absolutely sky-rocketed in value!

The 911 was 25k more than the M2c (and a gorgeous blue) but the real deterrent was way my iced tea cans just rolled around on the back seat Willy-nilly. So naturally I optioned the can-massage feature and went with the M2.
Why not drive the C63? C43 is the fake AMG lol, more like a 440i.

Personally I found the C43 to just be a German muscle car. It can handle turns if you need it to, the steering is heavy, but the car is way more comfortable cruising at 90mph than darting through traffic and tackling corners. The high belt line made me feel like I was sitting in the bathtub, and the ride/seats were exceedingly stiff.

I couldn't agree more. The C43 was absolutely soulless- very pretty; a bit like my first wife I suppose. I have driven an E63 since then (waiting for the missus' Audi sq5 to be serviced) and was impressed with the luxury and very snappy gearing- but again I felt totally disconnected. MB, at this point, is out for me so if BMW doesn't get their design act together it will have to be Porsche.

Lolll. The C43 was fine and all but not my cup of tea. The interior was sort of cheap too. But it's not like BMW's 4-series/M4 is a very visceral tossable car either.

I think the M2 is a great value relative to competitors. The Boxster S has gotten so expensive. Throw on premium pkg, nicer wheels, and basic leather and the price somehow balloons to $87k. Porsches are just overpriced at this point. M2 doesn't lease super well but overall it's still reasonable and it's a riot to drive.

In Germany the list price:

GT4 95k
M2CS 92k
A110s 65k

I think between these 3, for me the choice is simple:

I would not pay 65k for a 4 cylinder and this is why I didn't drive a 718-4.

M2CS isn't worth it since for about 55k or less you can have a M2C here.

That gives me GT4 but again for less than 80k you get GTS 4.0 which offers the same engine and drives better on public road.

All I know is this, life throws you a curveball, you slice it in half - I know I'm getting a manual CS with CCB but my best friend has a superb 911 with 1200km on the clock. It seems like a reasonable idea to share the cars so we each have half a Porsche and half a CS
