“About engine noise in the M2 Competition compared to the N55 engine. And there is no way to sugarcoat this, nor I would like to do that – simply put, I prefer the [previous] N55 engine over the S55, a raspier sound worthy of a sportscar. The M2 Competition is certainly quieter”

“while the design of the new wheels is quite attractive, its weight is not. The [new] wheels are now slightly over 10 percent heavier , on average. For comparison sakes, the [previous] 788M weighs 11.2 kg (24.7 lbs) and 11.9 kg (26.24 lbs) front and rear, respectively.”

Long live the original N55 M2 Classic. Save the cosmetic changes (mirrors and less comfortable seats), I’m pleased that I jumped into the 2018 LCI at ED sticker with PCD.

Good luck to everyone purchasing the new M2C.
Couldn't agree more. I'm happy for the folk excited to be getting into their new M2C's. They'll get a super quick car, which is evident from how these things were flying around the track. Credit to MR for calling out the flaws knowing he has one coming into the garage.

But I have no doubt whatsoever which car I'd rather be in... To me, the S55 M2C doesn't look, sound or feel like a 'real M2' to me judging from these reviews.

It seems like a departure from what made the car great (incredible value, great sound/looks and a good amount of poke in stock form) and now comes across as a smaller M3/M4 that basically requires mods from the outset (muffler delete and exhaust being the main ones). It's a different proposition now and certainly not nearly as attractive to me as the LCI I bought was.

It's now heavier, sounds worse, looks worse (subjective but that's my opinion), more expensive, and power delivery isn't as fun (apparently). Are all those negatives worth a 'real M' engine that can be tuned for super high HP, some sports seats and M mirrors? Not in my opinion... But each to their own!

Well so far there hasn't been a review of the US model without the dreaded OPF. It has been said that the tune in the US model is not the same as the EU version either. So I'll wait to see how things pan out. To say the the M2C is not a real M2 I think is a bit of a stretch, but to each their own.

Evo -
"Competition upgrades unlock the latent potential of the BMW M2, making it one of the most entertaining coupes money can buy."

AutoExpress -
"The engine transplant has helped give the newcomer true M car character, while the subtle chassis tweaks have added a welcome dose of control to the BMW’s already agile handling. Not only is the M2 Competition a fast and fun driver-focused coupe, it’s arguably the pick of the whole M car line-up."

Top Gear -
"This is a brilliant car, one of the best four-seat drives you can lay your hands on. One of the best drivers’ cars full stop."

If the US model is putting out more power sans the opf, that would be amazing.

I like EVO magazine comments about the motor and it's power delivery. Very much respect their opinions on cars.

"What’s changed is the way it delivers the goods – and it’s very much for the better. It pulls from low down with the same lag-free muscle of the old unit, but it now has hunger for revs, eagerly spinning around to 7500rpm redline with a lovely mechanical growl and just a hint of turbo whistle."

Above statement sounds like a proper S designated motor.

EVO also said "the M2 never really caught the imagination like it should"

Could have fooled me!

It's hard to believe some of these journalists are talking about the same engine they trashed when the F8X first came out...

It's exactly because of such statements that makes me question the validity of these car reviews! I can't wait to hear some unbiased review by the likes of Chris Harris or even better by our own members here

Pistonhead review is a bit different from others. It is written as a comparison to the 718. Interesting article. Was hoping they would do one of their video reviews. Pistonhead staff always come off as true enthusiasts.

Quote:
So. We like it. A lot. Is it better, overall, than a 718 Cayman? This being PH I'm spared the indignity of putting a star rating to it and there'll be a chance, I hope, to get them together on the right road and circuit at the same time. But if I were signing off on my monthly payments, right here, right now: for the first time since the Cayman's introduction, I wouldn't make them to Porsche.

OMG, I watched using Youtube's subtitles and auto-translate, which probably got about 25% of the translation right. But, I can't remember that last time I've laughed this hard at a Youtube video. This guy is AWESOME. This is the guy I want to go out and get hammered with in Dusseldorf!

Just watched it again. He's enjoying the car like no other of the reviewers i've seen driving the car.

One thing maybe worth translating is that at 06:15 he points out about the responsiveness of the engine, demonstrates few times and seems pretty satisfied. Was driving a 6MT.

He’s great. My 13 year old son and I both watch his stuff. Then say “cheers” in that crazy voice back and forth.

Love the videos! Car looks amazing. But that FAKE speaker generated ENGINE NOISE in all of the videos! It was the first thing I programmed out of my M2. Got to get rid of it so you can actually hear what the REAL car is doing.

Problem inside is that the only thing you hear is the ASD.

Maybe when you remove this you hear a touch more but the exhaust is so quiet, you only hear it properly with the window open and even then it is mehhhhh...

The exhaust sounds like a food mixer.
