I thought the same. If he let the clutch out there would have been a violent deceleration of the car, similar to hard braking, and possible loss of the rear end.

But there appears to be no movement of the drivers head or body in line with such a deceleration.

It's as if he just backs off and coasts.

Weird...

It's not common or easy to do, but no need to pile on the poor guy. He already paid out of pocket to replace his engine, which isn't cheap.

I'm not sure there is anything inherently manly about a MT either. I mean, I know all the bros think it makes them cool, but every teenage girl in Europe and the UK probably learned on a Peugeot with MT that's easier to stall than the M2. I drive an MT also btw...
If you're in Europe yes it's common but here in the states unfortunately a MT is a rarity. Infact kids here coming of age don't know what a MT is lol.

Yes, rare in the US. 5% or less in sales per year?

And yes, missed shifts can happen...

Not a "manly" skill to drive a stick by any means. Still a rare skill to master in this country. This car definitely feels like cheating with the revmatching. Super easy to drive compared to my past manuals.

Ok... well it's unmanly NOT to know how to drive a MT and frankly I find it quite embarrassing. But yeah just my opinion.

Yep in Europe, manual is standard. Only a fraction of people get an auto only licence here in the U.K.

Although I might have shifted from say 2nd to 5th in a strange car, I have never shifted from say 4th to 3rd when I meant to go to 5th.

And this is in no way a slight on the OP, I would be sick to have done that to my engine.

That's correct.

See for example this Cayman GT4 video at Nürburgring (miss-shift but no money shift, because all is OK):
  • 03:26: driver shifts from 2nd gear to 3rd gear and keeps accelerating;
  • 03:31: driver shifts by mistake from 3rd gear to 2nd gear; rev-match/auto-blip 'warns' him with a wail as soon as the gear stick accesses the 2nd gear slot/gate, while he still keeps the clutch depressed;
  • 03:32: driver quickly pulls the gear stick out of the 2nd gear slot/gate whilst still keeping the clutch depressed, shifts to 4th gear, releases the clutch and accelerates. All's fine.

I would never fault any reasonable driver for "Money Shifting." It's an accident and should be treated as such.

When you're behind the wheel, emotions are high, you get distracted, the car becomes overwhelming to handle, ect. Anyone can have a momentary lapse and miss a gear.

Just chuck it up to 'shit happens' and learn from the errors of your ways.

Check out the video below of some dude losing his new Supra in a blink. Such is life..

So what does the rev match function do when you attempt to go into too low of a gear for your current speed? I'm certainly not going to try to find out but does it just rev match up to redline or fuel cut or not do anything at all?

I've watched it a few times at 1/4 speed but the camera moves toward the dash right after he puts the clutch in and you can't see what's happening with his feet or his hand until everything is over with.
when you downshift from say 3rd to 2nd while 7k+ rpms, the rev limiter absolutely yells at you. i did it once accidently and i thought i broke my car, but i didnt let off the clutch. its an immediate startling engine scream as soon as you hit the wrong gate. i didnt see what rpms it hit though. i also dont shift aggresively so i had plenty of notice to back off. just took it in for service too and all was well.

Good video. The lambo should have moved over, as should the blue M3....

You're probably right but I've also lost control similar to that in the rain, with the DSC fully on.

Too much power overwhelming the rear tires and a slippery or cold surface, it's easier than you would believe.

No worries gents. All it takes is skill. But to get skill you need practice. And sometimes practice hurts.

If you find that funny, laugh away: MoneyShift

Everyone seems to think triple cone synchros and butter smooth shifts are something to be striving for, but maybe not so much for DragRacing You can't get into first gear for a REASON
