I'm confused. I placed my order over a month ago 6/18/20. Then dealer put the order in the "auto bank" and gave me a build sheet on Saturday 7/25/20 (the day after you ordered). When he put in the order, he said that the production date will be approximately mid September.
Why such a variation? This process seems so random, and different depending on dealer/state/country.

Exactly, each dealer are allocated a car, but also a build slot. Some dealers may receive a earlier build just due to the allocation process. Usually, if there is a customer sold vehicle, the dealer may do an allocation trade for an earlier build date.

Most likely your dealer doesn't have an allocation now , my dealer had an existing allocation at 112 status which he used for me . You need to check with the dealer before you book the car

Allocations

Each dealer gets allotted a number of spots per model based on their sales volume. So a dealer who sells 5 M2Cs a month will obviously have more spots than one who sells 1. And if there are no special orders against these, the dealer will just configure it themselves so it will go into production. If a dealer has an allocation that is about to enter production, and you walk in to order one, then can customize it for you.

Talk to the BMW relations team, maybe status is not updated realtime
I believe I will know more within 2 days. I was hoping to see it progress through all of the steps, I put my deposit down in February and this waiting without signs of movement is tough to take! I expected the actual build to be the one place where there would be some linear progress! Not yet!!
Here is the update:

Quite a lot of progress the tracker is not very accurate ite would seem!

The trackers are actually very accurate. The only reason why people assume otherwise is because they don't quite understand how production works.

These cars can - and often do - flip from "scheduled" to "final assembly" in a single day. That's literally how long it takes to produce this car. Mine did exactly that. Paint booth and other assembly steps take hours, not days. You will almost certainly "miss them".

The longest wait times are between "scheduled > production begins" and "carrier assignment > port", and obviously "port > dealer" assuming that you're not doing ED.

Dealer had one ordered so I put deposit on it July 3 and sat at the port. “In Transit” as of July 26. Pacing, waiting, researching, ordering stuff for her...

To all that answered my question, thanks for explaining the process. It definitely makes more sense to me now. I guess at this point, I am just stuck in the waiting game. At least I know it's in the dealers Auto Bank, and it will get started as soon as they get the allocation. Hopefully the salesman was somewhat accurate with the mid-September build date, so the wait is not too bad.

Just wanted to say that I joined the club too!! Thanks to everyone for their help!
Ordered a 2021 M2C as of 7/30!
Super excited, now I get to stare at the tracker like everyone else..

I don’t want to hijack the thread too much, but was reading about the blue brake calipers... is there a difference between blue and grey? Mine on the tracker also says blue as well, but it’s just that list of ‘standard’ features

In the US you get the "Big Brakes" standard - grey calipers, there are no options. Mine says that as well. Disregard

Did you just order the car on 7/30, or was the order just accepted by BMW on that day?
If you walked in to the BMW dealer on 7/30, how are you able to track already? Did they give you a production# or VIN, if so, how so quickly? Did you maybe spec a car that they already had an allocation for, and is being built already?
Sorry for all the questions, it's just that it's frustrating for me because I placed the order on 6/18, and all I got so far, is a car that's put in the Auto Bank, and a build sheet as of now. I'm anxiously still waiting for info so I can track the car on the online tracker.

I referred him to my CA who had an allocation that was scheduled for production. I believe my CA has 2 more allocations right now.

Seconding this. Our CA is extremely easy to work with and had an allocation. Car is scheduled for production, no VIN (just got a production number) for me yet or anything to track! Just waiting for production to start..

you will get a production number if your dealer has an allocation. The process starts then

That's how I understood it, and expected to wait a little more, so I was surprised when people here "ordered", and had a production# within the week. Now I understand, thanks!

My car has been sitting in "PRODUCTION BEGINS" for almost 2 weeks on the website. If you dial the BMW Genius 1-844-443-6487, you get more details. I was able to find out that it will be done with production on Aug 13. (For reference, the dealer placed my order on July 24.)

exactly same condition, the car is in production status from July 29th and BMW genius automated system says it will finish production on Aug 13th . I also placed the order on July 24th . therefore it's got to do with something when customer orders are placed.

Same here. I got my production number officially on July 27th and calling the number tells me production will be finished Aug 13th.

Its been in "Production Begins" since around Aug 3rd. I did get the VIN only a few days after placing the order though. Guessing theyre going to build the car in the next 1-2 days.
