Presumably insurance will pay regardless, but more than likely a question of whether you're at fault and your deductible, yes?

Going to sell the car if it's not totaled? Maybe cross your fingers they total it ...

Yea trying to sell an M car w/a salvage title is probably very very rough

Well, if they fix the car it won't have a salvage title. And if they total it then he doesn't need to sell it, he can just walk away and re-order (which would be ideal). I wouldn't want the car anymore, personally.

Because if insurance fixes it, instead of totaling it, it's not been salvaged.

Quote:
In North America, a salvage title is a form of vehicle title branding, which notes that the vehicle has been damaged and/or deemed a total loss by an insurance company that paid a claim on it. The criteria for determining when a salvage title is issued differ considerably by each state, province or territory.Wikipedia
If they fix it, it's going to have an ugly carfax, and this guy is going to have a hard time offloading it, but not as bad as if they were to total it, give him cash, he buys it back, and now he has a salvage-titled car.

He should be advocating for his adjuster to declare the car a total loss and walk away. Given what they are selling for on the used market, though, right now, that may be difficult.

No, that car is definitely your car taken for a test drive by your dealer. He asked us not to tell you. Repairs will take some time, hence the "5 months" quote by your dealer.
