Oil temp gauge

I wish there was an option to replace the efficient dynamics gauge with an oil temp one. It just seems like the logical place for it to be. Who else agrees?

There is a oil temperature gage. One of the options on the bottom center of the instrument cluster.

Dan. I know. I just would prefer it to be there at all times while I can still view other info in The center.

Asking because maybe I'm missing out on something, but what info would you rather run on that screen than the temp? Since the day I picked up my car, I always had the temp displayed because I didn't find any of the other options useful.

I agree with this 100%.
But BMW must think you want to keep a constant eye on saving fuel rather than keeping an eye on oil temperature in your M car.

It is actually a hybrid between coolant and oil temp IIRC (on a 2016 &2017).

There is a hidden menu with separate oil and coolant temps though, but it is a PITA to access every single time.

Distance to empty, or navigation screen.

Here's a good hidden menu video in 'British' English.

In general it is annoying that they can't write a little bit of software to cycle through different gauge readouts instead of just the fuel economy display. I can't think of a good technical reason why you couldn't cycle through fuel economy -> oil temp -> oil pressure -> boost -> etc and back to -> fuel economy. That section of the instrument cluster is just a mini-screen, and that can be programmed to show whatever.

Yeah no problem! I was also looking for something like this when I first got the m2, and found out about the little hidden menu. The only thing was it is a huge PITA to get to the menu every time so I never really bothered using it, so I just got a gauge system via an Android tablet instead.

It's not that they can't do it and more they don't want you to see oil pressure or boost because they don't want people wasting service time diagnosing what's typically incorrect interpretation of what oil pressure should be. Not many manufacturers offer oil pressure anymore outside of the domestics on trucks or pony cars. Same with boost gauges. Most new cars will vary max boost pressure based on engine load, air temperature, etc and they don't want people calling service asking why their car made 15 psig boost last week and only 13 psig today. I have no issue with removing that information from commuter cars but I have to admit the people that typically purchase performance cars are a little more educated on automobiles and can make good use of the extra information. I consider the Efficient Dynamics gauge a joke in an M car. I'm still kind of shocked that it made it to production.

All you have to do is make extended options like this not the default, enabled via an extended options somewhere in the iDrive menus. That will satisfy the "too complicated for the un-enthusiast" problem.

Imo too much money for way too little functionality. I prefer a full gauge system with data logging capabilities, i.e. an Android tablet running mhd, bm3, or ecutek.

For stock cars torque pro is fine.

Indeed the OG MX5/Miata had a real oil pressure gauge till 94/95 when Mazda replaced it with an idiot light gauge (shows constant P till it drops below some value) for this exact reason.

Too many people do not understand how oil P changes according to the situation at hand.

In any case modern engines should derate if they start to overheat.
