Will the G87 (next gen M2) be powered by a B58 or S58 engine ?

Has this been discussed before? Does anyone think this is likely on the next gen M2? Or will it always have the s55 and eventually the s58?

i think it'll depend on how they want to price the next gen rwd m2...i'm pretty sure the m2 gran coupe will just come with a higher output b48 motor.

If BMW want to keep the rwd m2 in the 60k range they'll probably just put in a tuned version of the high output b58 in the z4.

I think if they want to move the m2 rwd more upmarket it'll be 70k base with a s58 motor.

if BMW sells the s58 to toyota for the high output supra..the m2 will definitly get it.

They could do both - B58 for regular M2 and S58 for CS or Competition model.

But I think they'll go for:
230i - B48
240i - B58
M2 - S58 (430ish hp RWD)
M2C - S58 (470ish hp AWD)

I’d be all over a B58 M2 just as long as they don’t add an under carriage mounted oil cooler stupidity.

My gut feeling as well....

S58 is so strong out of the box as evidenced in the X3M that tuning it won't be necessary, that is, unless they detune it keep from stepping on the toes of the G80. As far as AWD goes, I doubt and hope it doesn't come to fruition. The extra 150 lbs will suck. Just make 11" rear wheels so buyers can put on 315mm rubber in order to adhere to the asphalt.

I was really unsure whether or not I should get an M2C and was probably going to wait for whatever the next generation one was. I already have experience with the B58 which has treated me well over my short experience with it. I also was wondering whether the ZF8 would be used over the DCT for the next one. But who knows whether I would even like what the new M2 would look like. I love how the current one looks.

There was an opportunity recently and I went for it. Still waiting for it to get to me.

If that's true then the M2C with the S55 is going to be a keeper.

Seems like a waste of development time for them to do both b58 and s58 engine.

If they came out with the b58 first I wouldn't even consider it with the s58 coming.

Unless of course the 2023 M2 follows in the footsteps of the new 3 series and gets bigger and heavier and then only offered with a ZF8. In this case the M2C is a big time keeper.

You just know it will get porkie-er. More HP to overcome it. 😔

Fun fact: the Tiger's power-pack made 600hp from 43 litres displacement (with a maximum rpm of 3,000rpm)

So, the engine is close...

You wasn't fooled; the N55 is an objectively good motor, the S55 is just better equipped for a higher load.

The upside is the N55 in the M2 was cheaper than the S55 in the M2C.

What I want to know is if they will still use the 2 piece crank design or make it one piece on the S58... couldn't find a straight answer from google.

The s55 in the m2c was only used because of emissions. It was really meant for the CS model only.

I believe the next m2 will get a b58 with the competition model getting a higher output b58 with slightly more power than the s55 in m2c. The next gen CS will get the s58 to help 'justify' the ridiculous price jump to the next CS.

Transmission? Is DCT dead?
