Again, you think CF is expensive.. it is not. It just takes a tad bit of pre-engineering. And the MARKETING of a cf bits will override errant bean counters.

No cf means BMW M short changed us, no amount of marketing will bring that back.

I am eagerly awaiting the M2 as many of you. I just got my 228 to save some money before going for the M2. I think its gonna be a great piece of engineering if the current 2 series is any kind of indication.
My thought on the pricing is somewhere along the lines of the AMG CLA45. I think the M2 will be competing here and within its price range. I am therefore hopeful to see a base price at or just below 50k with further options pushing it just above 60k. Time will tell.

My plan too. "Downgraded" to the 228, only to realize how much I like it. I can only imagine how awesome the M2 would be.

I have the same plan. Hopefully will work out nicely with end-of-lease timing.

Carbon Fiber roof is not expensive.. it is just exotic. Don't confuse the two. The BMW M2 will be about weight... there is no better place to save weight, than at the highest point in the car... why would BMW pass this opportunity up, just because YOU feel it aint worth it..?

The M2 must come with CF roof (& panels), just so it looses enough weight to be drop back down to 1-series weights.... as the 2-series gained 180lbs. But understand, it isn't necessarily how much weight, but WHERE that weight is... weight on the roof is a big No No..

No CF roof, no consideration.. that's why we buy BMW M's.. for the tech & engineering.
I agree. The decision to use the N55 in the M2 has signaled BMW's intentions to go conservative on power. That being the case, in order for the car to be competitive in its market segment, it will need to shed weight, and be extremely nimble. (By the way, I find this to be a very encouraging approach.)
In order to do this, the logical path is to leverage CFRP (which should be readily available thanks to the new plant)... we know they're not going to sacrifice tech and creature comforts, as they're a must to sell cars to most buyers (and even to many enthusiasts), so lightweight parts are the answer.

Is the CF plant up and running though? I could very well be wrong here, but I think I remember that the plant was going to be built out further to support additional capacity, right? If so, the plant may not be fully ready to support a large scale M2 CF program by the time the M2 starts production.

Yes, the plant expansion is targeted for completion in early 2015. That should still leave time to utilize materials for M2 production.

Great news! Let's keep our fingers crossed.

I still have a feeling that the M2 will weigh 3,350lbs or so once it hits the US, UGH!

What did you guys downgrade from? I am considering the same thing. When I crunched the numbers on my current lease (buyout - trade value in 3 years) it will cost ~$15K and if I lease a bare bones 228i for 3 years it will be about the same may $1k less. I think I am just going to keep my 335 in case the M2 is a dud or is out of price reach, doubt either will be true.

I think 3350 would actually be a solid result...I'm just hoping it's under 3400 (which was about the weight of the e46 M3).

M235i with moonroof delete, pss tires and no options is prbly 3400 lbs so M2 could easily achive that

From an X5. Previously I had gone through three 3-Series. These cars all had almost all the option boxes checked. My 228i only has driver assistance, lighting, style 385 wheels, and the alarm.

I actually leased a 2012 Buick Regal Turbo. It was/is a good car for what it is. I wanted something smaller and always wanted a BMW and the m235 was it. Crunching numbers and knowing id probably want to go to the m2 or maybe m3 down the road, I opted for the 228i M Sport, with lighting, manual seats, moonroof and leather seats. $200-$300 bucks in savings per month over the m235 over 3 years was reason enough for me to just save the difference and put it towards a car that I know I really really want, which is the m2. To some people 200 or 300 is not a lot, but its still quite a bit of money IMO. This time however, I am doing it properly with ED and all. It will be hard going to another brand after having driven and owned the first BMW.

That's so true
I am on my 2nd bimmer
Tested everything from audi to Benz to vw to caddy (always wanted a caddy when I was a kid in the 70's) but none of the above swooned me like my Eva

I would set the price around $55k well-equipped to give some room between the 235i and M2, but not so high that it encroaches on M4. I would pay low $60's if it had a real motorsports engine and was close to M4 in straight line performance.

And yes, 3350 .lbs would be a victory, sadly.

It would be great if the head unit would support apple carplay instead of having to shell out for full nav.

What would be great is if it could be had without the screen in the first place.

For 10k more over the m235 it should. Either that or they'll load it up with premium options standard like the other M cars.

You are right. I keep seeing 55k being thrown out there. That is way too much. Back when I bought my 1M, I built a 135is on bmw.com and with a couple performance option it was only a couple thousand cheaper than a 1M...msrp to msrp. I dont even know how the M2 could be in the 50's with no options. I guess if they make navigation standard and carbon fiber roof it could skirt around 50k. But 55k? It better have the S55 in it.

I think this is fair. If the M2 only has a few more hp than the M235i and no carbon bits, then the perceived vale is a lot less.

It will all depend on what's offered.
