Looks like he installed the matte 763M wheels with the M Performace logo stamped on them.I wonder if the actual M2CS gloss black 763M wheels will be available.I prefer the gloss black and they don’t have that awful looking M Performance logo.

Not bad. I like it, even though I like the stock 788 more.
For some reason, the rear wheel looks disproportionally large on this car. Also, I think these wheels must be paired with the 6-pot/4-pot calipers. Otherwise, the blue calipers look tiny - like they're swimming in the barrels - since this type of wheel is far more exposing. To me, the 788 still look classier, but you really can't go wrong with either one. |

Any idea what tire sizes he’s running? In a connect, maybe 265/30 and 295/30?

BTW, what's with the wider tire hype recently? - If you're doing it strictly for looks, cool. But if you believe for one second that more tire always translates to a better-handling car or quicker lap times, then you're fooling yourself.

Stock sizes, that's why I remarked on it. The video clearly shows the rear size, and you can just make out the front, so there is no mistake. They must run much wider than the standard Cup 2, as it's .1" skinnier in the front, and only .1" wider in the rear than the PSS.

A wider tire front and rear will result in more grip, but there are so many other factors to consider to determine if it will actually be "better." I think the general mentality on this M2 board is that 1.) the stock tires *look* quite stretched, and guys would rather have a flatter sidewall, and 2.) wider tires will result in better acceleration grip (something the M2 usually needs when the tires get a bit worn), which is incorrect.

These are the tires used in the video, but Michelin doesn't provide the specs.

Like you said, there are way too many control variables that determine whether a wider tire will be beneficial or detrimental. For example, the overall chassis design and balance of the car, track/street conditions, suspension (overdamped/underdamped), type of tires, etc. If you have ultra grippy tires, those forces have to be effectively displaced. That's why pairing fat grippy tires with a subpar suspension will almost never result in "better handling". Also, in the dry, one may find that wider tires actually make the car feel extremely understeer-y and that there is less control over the rear end. The stock setup or only a slightly wider staggered setup may perform best. Simply slapping on the fattest set of tires you can fit on the wheels is not the best approach, especially if you haven’t considered all the factors, including your driving style. The only time a wider tire in pretty much guaranteed to perform better is under braking (in the dry). But generally, yes, there's such a thing as too much tire. more tire ≠ improved handling (or traction for that matter) |

OK, I have contacted Joe about these tires, and this is what he said.
The tires on his car aren't available to the public at this point, they are indeed wider, and carry the old logo design. I made it clear that I was quite interested in the tires he was running because they seemed to be quite a bit wider. He said he will be meeting with some Michelin big-wigs on Tuesday and he will get back to me on it. He also sent me a couple more shots of his tires. |

On my F80 m3 I went up to 265 front and 305 rear. However the balance just wasn't there. Felt twitchy and understeered. Played around with alignment etc but not much difference. Unfortunately I was running stage 1 initially and needed grip as it was always spinning tires. However whenever I switched to my square winter set the car just rotated and handled (as far as understeer) a lot better over all. On my m2 competition I've left it stock as it just behaves so much better this way. |
