Randy Pobst review of M2: "my favorite BMW of the last ten years" - "I love the car"

  • randypobst@movingchicane my favorite BMW of the last ten years, and definitely in the spirit of the original E30 M3. #Motortrend quick and stable, and puts power down. And M4 has improved, too, though it's only a '15

There must had been something wrong with the 1 M. Probably (the infamous) tire pressure.

The review is in the works.
Didn't he say the same thing about the 235?

EDIT - he might have said the 235 was his favorite BMW or car of the last 10 years (somehow missing the E46 M3, Z4MC, E92 M3, 1M), so I don't take his ratings that seriously anyway - good or bad.

Haha, always lough out loud for real when I hear about tire pressure and that hilarious thread in the M4 forum.

His 1M review.

RANDY POBST’S IMPRESSIONS

On handling… “The 1M is an improvement on the 135, which I’ve spent some time in, but NOT my favorite car. In fact, I hate this car. It won’t turn. The thing I didn’t like about the 135 was its mid-corner understeer, its reluctance to turn once it was in the corner, and the 1M still does that. And it’s the primary thing I remember after driving the car. That it is very lazy on turn-in.”

On the transmission… “The shifter is slick, and light. I really enjoy that. You gotta do it just with your fingertips. If you try to muscle it with a fist, you’re gonna get the wrong gear.”

On the seats… “I like the seats a lot, very comfortable and supportive, except…too high. I’m a tall guy; this reminds me a lot of the older Volvos or Range Rovers where they mount the seat really high so you can get a good view. Which is great, but I’m tall, I’m already high. I want to be down in the car. And I couldn’t lower the seat enough, and I just felt like I was sitting on the car, not in the car, which I’m not a fan of.”

On the steering… “Steering, relatively slow ratio, which I actually like because I think everyone turns in too fast. I’ve always liked BMW for building that into their cars. I just didn’t like what happened with the handling as I turned the wheel, there was just not enough response entering the corner. And braking hard made it worse. A lot worse. I mean, that car would go straight if I was in the brakes very hard at all. So, I found it very disappointing.”

On the engine… “The engine is smooth, the power is reasonably good, but in today’s world, that’s not a fast car. I’m telling ya, it is not a fast car in today’s world. Maybe because I’ve just spent too much time in 500-horsepower cars.”

Overall… “It’s almost like it was built by safety engineers. But only until you get on the power, and then, getting on the power, it’s not really good at putting the power down, either. I’m just not impressed with this car. I like the M3 so much that I find the 1M to be very, very disappointing, though the M3 understeers too much, too. I think the lawyers are running the handling department at BMW right now, and they don’t have to. Just make it handle like the 1988 M3 did — that car was perfect. You know, I hate to pick on what is obviously overall is a pretty good car, but in today’s world there are not very many cars I hate…I hate this car.”

So BMW must have fired some lawyers and went all out in the handling and putting the power down departments to make the M2.

Journalists & "journalists" tend to often exaggerate and forget what they said.

So I want to know what is his favorite BMW in the last 15-20 years..?
The M235i balance is just stupendous for a front engine car so I can only imagine the M2 is even better. To Randy, I'm sure that balance is item #1 because all he does is drive it on track and I doubt there is another BMW in the last 10 years that nails the balance as well.

I guess his favorite was the M235i and now it has been replaced in his list of favorites by the M2.

When I googled 'Randy Pobst' and 'Tyre Inflation' I also found this picture.

Overinflation. The left one(s)

I hated this video only because it doesn't even pick between the two - it picks the STI instead.

I hate when they do that.

Thank you - I was almost 100% he had said it.

And to the other poster, since the declarant is available via video, this isn't hearsay.

Randy loves a car that can put its power down and has said so repeatedly. If you have ever driven a 1M hard you can easily divine why he was initially put off by its inability to do just that.

I watched the vid, and heard him. And no it's not hearsay. And now, the M2 has replaced the M235i on his list. But, here is the question, what BMW was his favorite before the M235i?
E46 M3? Z4M? E92 M3?

That's like asking a vegetarian what's his favourite kind of beef.

Interesting interview in EVO magazine this month with Frank Van Meel Head of BMW M Division. He is asked what his favourite M car is from the past. He says without hesitation it is the 1M. I like it he says as difficult to drive in the wet!! It gives you fun !!

He was also asked how do the M4 GTS and M2 compare? They are different worlds. The GTS is a real racing car, completely reworked. But the M2 has a shorter wheelbase, and it’s very agile with go-kart steering. It has more grip than the 1-series M, and is easier on the limit. It gives you good confidence. The regular M4 has a broader brief than the M2; it allows the M2 to be purer. [...]"

I do not know this dude, although I have certainly heard of him. But he looks painfully geeked on top of that car. Wince-able.

Yes, except for his comments about it not turning.

He already said it in the M2 quote... The E30 M3.

That's what I was saying too! Don't forget the 1M.

All of those cars, hands down, are better than the 235. Not even close to be honest.
