Jumped curb with both rear tires :(

Hi all -

Long time reader and I’ve learned a lot from this forum. I’ve had my 2018 M2 LCI for more than a year. I messed up a few days a go where I gave my car too much throttle in wet conditions in a roundabout forgetting that it was in DSC off mode. The car skid 180 degrees and jumped a 5-6” curb with the rear wheels at an angle. The left wheel jumped first then the right. It was loud and I thought I surely will see horrible damage when I look at it. But, to my amazement, there was zero visible damage to the car. I’m extremely fortunate that no one was hurt as a result of my stupid mistake.

I now have to find out what real damage I did to the car. It drives fine with absolutely no noises. I drove it in all conditions including an hour on the highway and the only thing I noticed is that alignment is clearly affected and now the steering wheel has to be turned like 10 degrees to the right for the car to go straight I made an appointment at a good shop to check the alignment. But I’m scared to find out what I actually damaged underneath. Could the frame be bent somehow? Bent the shocks? Control arms?

Other than the reason the alignment is off, could I have affected the diff somehow?

Would really appreciate your thoughts.

If I were to bet, I would guess that you bent a control arm. I am surprised that you didn’t damage both wheels also.

Good luck with the repairs and tell us what the actual damage was. You also have the chance to report it to your insurance company and just pay your deductible if the bill is too high.

This thing will
Catch you out! Did the same
Thing in the wet and ran into a curb. This was right before lowering so the curb passed nicely under the front bumper and gave a good scrap to the underside before kissing the front wheels. 😂

At the least, probably a control arm. I had one bend when another driver accidentally pit maneuvered me (pulled into my lane) going 15mph and hit the front of my rear quarter panel and front of the rear wheel. I heard they're designed to give in an accident. Which is one of the reasons I didn't upgrade mine to the fall line or dinan variants.

Side story:
It's been rather warm lately, but today was in the 40s with misty rain. I guess I wasn't used to driving my m2 in cold/wet anymore. Because I was making a 90 degree left turn in my city and didn't have a stop sign, dropped down to 2nd gear in the turn and gave it a little too much gas coming out. I wasn't even trying to race or drive fast or give it more gas than normal. But I fishtailed a bit and almost hit the car on the oncoming lane stopped at the corner. Pretty sure I was close to spinning 90 degrees, so I would've hit the car's rear driver's side door with my front bumper. Luckily I was in sport+ and also instinctively counter steered to save it.

Anyway, best wishes at the alignment shop. Keep us updated.

Thank you, DanG.

I didn’t report this issue immediately to the insurance company. Would I still be able to do it more than a week later?

Thank you all for your input and wishes.

I think one of the reasons I had such an unexpected skid was that I had just come off the winter tires. The original Conti’s are much more slippery in cool, wet weather.

Yes. Most insurance companies give you 30 days to report an accident.

Attaching a couple of photos showing what happened. It looks like the left rear tire jumped in the air after hitting the curb (and breaking some of it) then landed in the mud and plowed for a few feet with my foot hard on the the brakes. The right rear got on the curb later and moved only a short distance before the car stoped.

Good luck with the repairs. I just had my first autocross 101 for newbies day yesterday, and a passing storm cloud dumped us with sleet and rain. Managing the M2 on the crappy Conti 3s with traction fully off was a handful. I saved many "tank slappers" except one, in which I slid fully sideways into the timing gate and destroyed the tripod (which I had to pay for). Luckily very little cosmetic damage from that and from the cones I hit throughout the day. If you've never tried autocross, I highly recommend going to your local 101 beginner's course.

You won't know what exactly is broken, if anything, until the car is on a lift and so you can inspect the undercarriage. A few of the suspension components and the wheel and assemble is made of forged aluminum, which can withstand a decent impact and remain unscarred, so it might not have even been affected by the this.

The diff has a temperature sensor, if it was busted, the light would of probably came on by now.

Take it to a shop and if they claim something is bent or broken, have them show it to you. For good measure, you should do an alignment but other than that, you might be find.

My guess is bent control arm, shock, wheel/tire, hopefully nothing worse.

I think that a hunter alignment machine will let you know how much it is off. That is where I would start.

Shop found no damage!! Just did an alignment and the car drives normally again.

Thank you all for your advice and support! I’m SO lucky and humbled to have learned such a big lesson without major damage!

No more DSC off in the wet with the Conti’s!! My Pirelli Sottozero 3 winter tires spoiled me as they are so very poised and controllable in the wet and I had just come off them.

Glad to hear your car only needed an alignment 👍.

I'm surprised your LCI came with Contis though. I thought it was just 2017s that had a lottery of Michelin PSS and Conti 3s.

Glad to read it was nothing major.

Normaly with my luck instead of the curb you put a police car and a tv network ready to film, true story

Just have to be thankful for the car being ok.

I would suggest no DSC off in the wet on public streets period no matter the tire, but that's just like my opinion man.

tsk, tsk. You guys need to leave DSC on unless you're on the race track and know what you're doing.
