Sliced Bumper
Yesterday, I was driving on the freeway and out from under the car in front of me a metal object flies straight into to my front bumper. It then went under my car and fortunately I don't think it did any damage underneath. My question is, should I go through my insurance to have the bumper replaced or will the repair show up on a carfax as damage and lower the value of my car? I don't plan to ever sell the car but you never know what may change that in the future.
Also, has anyone had to replace the same part and has an idea of what it will cost? |

Ouch, that's some dumb luck..
If the mounting tabs that hold the bumper to the fender is still attached, just have them Bondo up the blemish and repaint the whole bumper for proper color matching. No need to ding your insurance and note Carfax for something that you can easily pay out of pocket for. It might cost you a little now but you'll save a lot more in the long run. |

I agree. The bumper looks like it can easily be repaired. Probably will cost about the same as your insurance deductible.

I pretty sure you cannot bondo flexible parts. Now you can upgrade to the euro bumper without reflectors.
Also not everything is reported to Carfax. |

The Euro bumper would be really awesome but it's more than I'm wanting to spend. What determines whether it is reported or not?
I did find this which is much more reasonable in price. https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...r/51118068533/ |

Better check the undercarriage before you start getting estimates on a new front bumper cover. I have run over loose HVAC ducting that shredded undercarriage parts including gas tank. Obviously your gas tank isn't leaking but whatever you ran over was pretty sharp and you should ensure the damage was limited to just the front bumper cover that needs to be replaced as that cannot be repaired. Not exactly sure why you are obsessed with a damage claim if you are planning to keep the car long term as it's not like the low $$$ amount of this repair is going to trigger concerns of a collision from a prospective buyer.

May want to skim through the thread but here is some info to get your started...
https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...7&postcount=71 https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...9&postcount=99 If an accident requires the car to be towed and if that accident is reported to the state, there is a good chance the insurance company will learn about it during their next query and it might show up on a Carfax. |

It is repairable. The process is different than fixing metal. There is a lot of heating and melting involved. But at this level of damage the repair would cost close to the OEM bumper so I'd say it's not worth repairing.
It will have to get painted either way. The stock bumper is about $600 |

I had some damage done to the front bumper as well recently, not as bad but still requires painting the entire thing.
Cost is around $700, that's from 2 shops, one was BMW certified. That bumper you posted is without paint so painted, a new bumper is probably double the repair cost, $1200-1400. That's what I was quoted anyways.

to the OP, look on eBay for a used front bumper. there are several of them listed right now. might even be able to find one in the same color.
