Is the M2 still slated against the Cayman? The Supra also targets the Cayman and I am pretty sure part of their agreement was to not have competing sports cars. I know that one is a 2 seater and the other 2+2 but 2 similarly sized coupes on a similar platform with similar engine options sound pretty similar to me.

Having driven a Cayman and Cayman S 6mt immediately prior to my first foray in an M2, I couldn't care less about the added weight. The M2 felt immensely more powerful, spirited, and yet forgiving. The 60-100 extra horsepower for the M2 vs the base 718 Cayman made the driving experience wholly different. While they might technically have people cross-shopping them, I think I'd be more inclined to compare the Z4 to the 718s. The manual on the M2 was also much smoother. Sure, the Porsche transmission was remarkably precise, but the M2s manual just made me feel like I was a better on a manual transmission than I actually was. No accidental jerkiness, no lugging starts off the line, just a blast. I don't even want to look at the Supra, either. From the moment it was released I had no interest, and I don't know why.

2020 m2 cs vs 2022 m2
what does everyone think? i have an allocation for the CS but im debating passing on it if this new 2022 m2 with specs not too far off comes out in a year or two. i own the og m2 (2017) now for 3 years, absolutely love it, just want to make sure i do the right thing here. looking at how much the m4 cs has depreciated has spooked me a bit as well. thanks guys.

If you're concerned about depreciation then keep what you have or get a great deal on an M2C. The CS may have some collector value way down the road but most people don't have the patience to wait out the value curve.
If money is not your concern then buy the CS and be proud and happy. About the new M2 in 2022, it's mystery ware. It might be a big fat pig. Live for now. |

Couldn't do that with a 2023 G87 M2.

Honestly, I still love the CS, but from a limited edition and investment standpoint. In terms of performance, it does not have as large of a gap compared to the M2C for my specific use case. Although I do love the electronic dampers.

The 2 Series coupe (G42) will be based on a variation of CLAR platform that underpins everything from the Z4 to the 7 Series. In this sense, you can say M5 is also somewhat based on Z4. The G87 M2 will be directly based on G42, of which we've already seen the leak picture. Most would agree it's pretty disappointing visual wise. The G87 and G42 will share chassis, unibody, a lot of body panels and all the electrics, just like the F87 and F22 do. There is very little BMW is able to change at this point, having made this far. The M that's based on G29 Z4, if it ever gets made, would be called Z4M, potentially the best M that BMW can make at this age. The M2 for the foreseeable future, will go into the market as the entry budget M model. However, the Z based M should be positioned similarly to the M4 if not slightly higher. BTW, BMW doesn't seem to be eager to build something to compete against the M3/4, the very core and highly profitable M model. Sean

I understand that platform is an overarching term that more so relates to the development philosophy and not that the 2 series and X7 will share a physical chassis components. This is why I used the word "underpinnings" and not "platform" to avoid this confusion because it is obvious that any new rwd BMW will be based on the CLAR platform. The future 2 series being based off the Z4/Supra underpinnings that will produce 2 very similarly sized coupes with the 2 series/M2 and Supra, which will have very similar engine options and probably similar pricing. |
