Spring removal with Jack lowering

Hi,

I'll be fitting my AST coilovers soon - can't wait to try them!

Re removing the old shocks, has anyone lifted their front suspension arm with a jack to compress the spring tension, removed the strut nut and then lowered the jack slowly to gradually release spring tension?

I do have some spring compressors, but doing the above seems to my mind safer and quicker.

Any thoughts or experience?

Cheers!

Yup, that’s exactly what I did for my coil over install. I followed a YouTube video. It was pretty easy. I put the front of car on jack stands under each front jack point, then with wheels off ground did the job using my floor jack to support hub and then lowered it after the nut was off. Just have to remove headlight sensor and the sway bar off strut. That’s about it. I watched a couple YouTube’s the day before I did it.

Yes to the above. I also fitted the coilers the same way - but in reverse.

If you watch Evolve YT channel for suspension swaps on their bmw fleet (m3/m2) and supra, it looks as if they use this method.

I did my strut top hat replacement for the M2C / M3 / M4 brace the same way, after watching the Evolve video. It was actually really easy and I'm not sure why others wouldn't do it this way.

The only thing that would help to have a helper for, is aligning the strut shaft as you jack the car back up. I did it alone, but it was kind of awkward pushing in one direction and trying to pump in another.

I also used a Quickjack to lift the car rather than jack stands, which might make it a tad more stable.

Undoing the drop link beforehand makes things easier too.

The Evolve videos are actually super helpful for tips - I like the way that they undo the rears by removing the inner arm bolt, instead of the camber bolt on the hub - again, looks a lot simpler.

It'll only take me 10 mins now per corner!!! (I wish!!!)
