DIY: Camber plate install

Here's the video from Thursday night's camber plate install. Took us 5 hours. Could do it in 2.5 next time.

Nice video.

Though a found it easier and safer to just remove the struts completely.

Makes me nervous seeing someone use spring compressors like that.

Thanks!

What part makes you nervous with the spring compressors? It was actually really nice having the knuckle act like a bench vice

Those types of spring compressors are prone to failure. In leaving the struts on the car, you're forced to put yourself in a semi-dangerous position directly in front of a compressed spring while holding a relatively hefty metal object.

If you remove the struts, you can lay them on a bench and work from the side, so you're not in the "danger zone" in front of the strut.

Even better, use a bench compressor, or a set of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CV6L57D/

Ah ok that makes sense. Yeah they were some shady spring compressors! Next time I'll be more specific when I tell someone to bring spring compressors over LOL.

What did you have them set the Camber at when you did the alignment? How do you like the way it handles on the street for DD? Nice job with the video.

Thanks a lot!

Well it's not my car, but my friend had them set it to -2.5 front and "stock" rear, whatever that is. Probable -1.5?

Good job. What did you do, mount the camera on your head? Other than having a professional cameraman position himself in the proper places, I can't imagine doing better. Most videos like this are hand-held and difficult to watch.

Me, however, I ain't never gettin' near no spring assembly like you guys did. As others have noted, that's kind of dangerous.

I'd love to hear your friend's impressions of driving the car after the change, increase in noise and vibration, for example.

thanks! I film all my stuff with my phone hand held. Sometimes on a tripod. But I'm a cinematographer too so I guess that helps. I actually feel bad about the quality usually, but have to balance the quality/time it takes. And filming at all makes every job take a lot longer!

I'll have to ask him to comment on the video with his impressions. Thanks for talking the time to watch and respond.

The 2 strut brace bolts on the firewall are accessed by removing the round caps (immediately above the bolts) from the plastic trim on the base of the windscreen. No need to remove a wiper arm or lift the trim itself. You can then use a socket & torque wrench.

I only know this from watching a few youtube videos to prepare myself to install some Ohlins coilovers

Why 2.5 if done again? I have to install mine and have M performance coilovers on it already.

any tips

Just since I've done it and figured it out. Nothing more than what's in the video
