Tune Vs. Bigger Turbo, What Is Best?

Starting this thread because I'm trying to decide between tuning my M2 or going with a bigger turbo. There are so many options for tune and from what I understand a bigger turbo basically boils down to Dinan or Pure. Thought I create a thread so everyone can post what their experience has been with either of these options. Which is best and what gives the best power and drivability.

I might be wrong, but If u go big turbo. (1 big turbo) to be exact, you would lose drivability vs. a single twin scroll turbo. More horsepower etc but hardly more Street drivable.

But yeah tune, u may also want to check if u need supporting mods beyond a bigger turbo.

Depends on the stage of the turbo and manufacturer and what tune you're running.

You just tune for driveability is all.

I understand the tuning part, but thought a truely bigger turbo (not the ones where they swap out the compressor wheel) require time to boost up... especially vs a twin scroll set up where you typically enjoy the low mid end range of the power band, which is where most people spend their time on the street.

Maybe you right. Always thought that when i has shopped for a larger turbo on my golf r.

Just to point out - twin scroll is a design of manifold passages which is untouched with either pure or Dinan.

The Dinan turbo is a stock turbo housing with different turbines inside. The issue I have with the Dinan kit is the amount of cutting needed for the larger intercooler. You have to cut out a portion of the structural tubing in front of the radiator. I'm sure they wouldn't sell it if it impacted the structural integrity of the vehicle, but it still dissuades me from wanting it. Hacking up an expensive car for more power than I'm convinced the M2 can handle doesn't sound great. That's one reason why I lean towards a tune instead.

Cutting on paper seems much more entailed. That "tubing" that requires cutting is a pretty slim brace. It's more what you cut in the rear of the bumper and the bottom plastic to open up the pass thru that what you cut of that brace.

I read this 20 times before committing to do it.. now seeing the benefit of running the car hard in 95+ degrees and still having the power on tap is way worth it.

I pieced all my parts together based on exactly what I wanted and felt I needed. No package. My mod list is in my signature and my thread. But it basically things to make it breath and flow better.

Ah, I see. I only looked at the brace cutting on page 6. Didn't realize there was more cutting involved on the bumper, air duct, and lower cover.

Are you running stock tires? Do you have a lot less traction than stock? That's another concern I have with a tune vs a more powerful turbo upgrade.

All cuts are minimal, but they are cuts regardless. I was against any mods at the beginning. A month after buying the car it was already lowered. Now a year after it has its fair share of changes including the intercooler that cut up some potions and also the carbon lip which screws into the bumper to reinforce and ensure it's still there when you hit 140-150mph.

I am running stock tires. I do lose traction much more than when stock but nothing crazy. The car puts the power down. I can't help with your decision on the bigger turbo or tune since I don't have any of them.

I can tell you that I did pick the intercooler since these cars suffer of heat soak and being in FL as soon as those IAT go up, you will be robbed of power.

As is the car laid down 411whp and 443tq using the assortment of DINAN parts. That is more than enough for now for me. Next year that might change.

Oh, I didn't realize you don't have the upgraded turbo. Your power is in between the Dinan P1 and P2 packages. Which is good to know. I was planning on doing a 265/285 tire upgrade, whichever route I went. So I think I'll be good with that. Thanks for the info. Cheers!

These are some pretty good numbers on tune and better air flow. Typically downpipe and cai plus tune is enough for most people. When you start doing a real big turbo, it’s a lot more involved than bolting on a tweaked stock turbo.

Ban m2, how much boost you running? Also with the FMIC. How much were you able to bring down the Temps

The 411whp and 443tq were done at 4 over stock which is the Dinan Sport Tuner on Race Mode.

Data logs I registered before and after showed stock running 10 degree higher IAT when ambient was 10 degrees lower.

Stock - 85 ambient reading 120 IAT
DINAN - 95 ambient reading 110 IAT

Did some logs this week on track but haven't emailed them and reviewed yet.
