M2 Comp Traction
Hey everyone,
Recently got my 2020 M2 competition after selling my '04 E46 M3. When I give the car gas, the car is prone to sliding around and the traction control light comes on. This thing is always wiggling in the back. Is this a sport plus thing or perhaps I stay on the clutch for too long when shifting? Anyone else encounter this "slideeness" |

There's so much mechanical grip I have to work to get mine sideways even with the nannies off. As above, your tires may be shot.

Even in MDM/Sport+, if I nail the throttle midway thru a turn, it'll wiggle for a second and then straighten itself out. Almost wish it was a little bit more permissive without turning off all the nannies AND rev matching, which I like.

Welcome! Sad to hear the E46 M3 is sold, but you have a great replacement car. Agree with the above. By nature, a rear-wheel drive car with 404 lb-ft of torque is going to be a handful. Since the S55's debut with the F8X M3/4, M has really worked on traction and refined the response of the engine. They nailed it on the M2C, IMO. Rock steady when you want and tail happy when you want. I felt it was very good out of the box with old-tech Michelin PSS tires, but PS4S tires are so much better in terms of grip. If your tires are worn, go for it!

I have a ‘21 M2C, just put on Michelin PS4S on all wheels, and had an alignment recently; however, when I go into Sport (not even Sport +), and put the hammer down, the back end can start moving around. In fact, it even happened today. The car just has a ton of power.

Agree with my spirit brother KevinM about refinements in traction since the early F80/82’s. My buddy has a ’15 M4 and that thing has all kinds of trouble getting power to the ground. Much improvement in the M2c.

I just went from stock 265/35/19 PSS* to 295/30/19 PS4S and it seems to get a bit better traction from a stop, but I'll have to actually do launches to confirm.

if you dont like the back end squirming you bought the wrong car. thats what makes it fun.
the m2c has much less low end torque than the m3/m4 due to the tune. so its less squirmy in the low rpm, but also has less to 6th/7th gear passing power on the highway. you could always throw some R888s or Cup2s to add traction. but imo less traction is more fun. My BRZ on prius tires was more fun than my GTR with 335 section PSS

Without seeing your tires, it sounds like you might need a new set. That said, I have a 2021 M2C with stock tune (under warranty and only 10K miles total) that I installed some 763m wheels at 5k miles and went 10mm wider front and rear 255mm & 275mm. I also went from Michelin PSS to PS4S. I feel the grip is much better with the PS4S tires, and made similar improvements on my e46 ZHP and my M5.
That said, the car builds horsepower quickly and in some instances will spin the rear tires under just acceleration....no clutch play needed. If you keep the nannies on, its pretty un noticeable. That said, with the traction control off, you can induce drift and wheel spin pretty much at will, especially if the car is unbalanced or in a turn. This car is very forgiving and the M Differential is masterful at keeping things in check and keeping you out of trouble. I love the nimble feel of the car even though it isn't really a light weight. You can always add more tire or a more sticky tire to address the wheel spin, but I think just learning the cars' characteristics and playing with it at the edge of traction and a bit beyond is the way to go. Its just too damn fun to drive at the edge to mess with it too much, in my opinion. As others have said, perhaps some new tires to start with. Enjoy and welcome..... |
