New M2 or Used 991/911S
I'm currently in a 2012 911 GTS with sport seats, aero kit, power kit & PDK that I use on the weekends and on the track. I have a 2014 X1 that I use for my daily driving chores. Both cars will be traded in for whatever I get.
Since I'm not going to the track as often as I used to I want to pare it down to one car with a manual transmission - the PDK is amazing on the track, but boring on the road.. I've narrowed the choices down to a new BMW M2 coupe or a 13/14 911S coupe. I would love to have a Jag F(s or v8) coupe, but they're hard to come by in a coupe with a manual transmission and the V8 version is over priced considering the Jag depreciation. Cost/Cost to own: I think the M2 should hold some value (if the 1M is any indication) and is $20K cheaper than a used 911s with the options I want (sport chrono, PASM, sport suspension, 14 way seats ( less important - Bose, sport exhaust, keyless entry) ) In addition the M2 will cost nothing to maintain for as long as I'll have it (4yrs/50k miles, I'll keep it a year or two). The 911 is not cheap to maintain, those 20" tires are 1500-1800 a set (plus you get to pay for Porsche to mount and balance them), general maintenance on the car is probably another $1000 a year just for the basics even if I change my own oil. Insurance wise the 911 is not cheap, M2 is probably going to be about 2/3rds the cost. The M2 wins here Usability : They both have back seats, but the 911 rear is not really useable for an adult, frunk space is marginal, but adequate for daily use. Luggage would have to go in the back seat. The M2 has a decent back seat, not huge, but okay in a pinch and a real trunk. I have not driven one, but if it's anything like the M235 it's going to be comfortable and have all the daily creature comforts I think the M2 wins here too. Driving: I have not been in a car that I liked to drive better than any 911 I've driven in any conditions, in any place but bumper to bumper traffic. I have not driven an M2, but using the 235 experience I would rank it three steps below my GTS and 2 steps below the new 991.1 911S. 911 wins by a long shot Maybe I'm off base here, has anyone driven both the 991/911S & and the M2? Tracking: 911s is sublime on the track, the M2 gets great reviews, but I can't imagine there's any comparison. I talked to a guy that had an M2 on track last weekend, he raved about it, but hasn't had a 911 on track to compare it to. 911 Wins here too. Again, anyone have experience on-track with both cars? Other Choices: I like the idea of a new SS Camaro, GT350 Shelby or a used M4, but they're just too big for my tastes, even a used M4 is too expensive for what you get and the dealers think the GT350 is worth $10-$20k over sticker. The Camaro is the clear value choice, but I just don't feel comfortable in it. Another S5 might be cool, but again too big and too hard to find in a 6 speed. I've had a corvette and don't want to go there, nice car, great bang/buck, but I'm not a huge fan of the new gen and I don't like the BS that goes along with owning one. I would love a C2 for a weekend car, but that's not going to happen any time soon. Which would you pick? |

M2
You're never going to be able to, so to speak, pile those 2 bu fers and Sacrete into the 911. If you, indeed, are planning to trade in the two cars you mentioned, then, you might add this to your list of pros and cons: expect to take a bath financially. IMO, best sell them yourself. |

I just don't think you can compare these cars - they are in a different league. I've had a good go in a 997 GTS (with the sport chassis and aero kit) on the road and it's seriously great, and had awesome grip. I did however find that with the PDK gearbox I wasn't really involved in the ride, you basically mashed the loud pedal and pulled a paddle when you ran out of revs (where is the fun in that?!).
I've actually preferred a 6mt M2 instead of the GTS I describe above. It might not be as great, bit I think it FEELS faster and the manual gets you more involved in the action. Just remember though - nothing hooks up like a 911! |

I've just sold my 2013 991 Carrera S to get into a M2.
Its no way a financial decision but more of needing better daily driver practicality. The M2 will be plenty fast but as I play hockey (can't easily or for that matter carefully place a hockey bag and two sticks into the cab) and ride road bikes; it just isn't practical. Plus with two kids aged 3 and 6 getting them in and out is a nightmare in such a small rear seating quarter. Having digested the pros and cons of both cars I still feel the M2 is a bargain and will hold its value alot more than the 991. However, this being said I just sold my 991S for $7k more than I paid for it (highly highly optioned with CPO). I'm excited to get back to a purist car. From: To: |

I hear you on the trade-in. The 911 has a ding on the car-fax from the previous owner, so selling it outright is going to be a PITA. I paid $65k and might be able to get $62 for it now - if I get $58 on a trade in then I'm within the savings differential I'll get on 6% sales tax with the trade-in. I'm upside down in the X1, so I'll probably sell that at CarMax or something easy. |

991 all the way!
Porsche is a better car, better finished and better value. On the other side, the M2 is probably one of the best bang for the buck in performance wise IMHO. |

The 991S is a bargain right now. Nearing the bottom of it's depreciation curve, I think.
You can always go back. 991's are plentiful. M2's, at least for a few years, not so much. I also think the 2017 M2 MSRP will be higher, protecting the 2016 buyers. It's pretty safe if you can get one. Last thing to consider, 991/997.2 you sit down in the car, in the M2 you sit a lot higher. Even in the M3/M4 the seat is lower. If you're used to and prefer sitting lower you may have some adjustments in your driving style. |

As said above you can always go back to a 911 as they made a ton of 991's (991.1 variant which is current up to 2017).
The new 2017's with turbo's (no longer naturally aspirated) are called 991.2's and its too soon to tell what impact (if any) they will have on 991.1 values. Their MSRP is higher but remember Porsche is the master at perceived value or making you feel like you're still obtaining the best sportscar on the market. |

I can barely get my hockey gear into my X1 with the seats folded. I imagine my M2 will be worse, looks like the Landy wins another round...

I almost bought a 991 GTS this past summer... I was REALLY close. It was one of the most fun cars I've driven... sound was great, handling was stellar, power was good (needed more low end torque) and the overall experience was amazing. However, the price was silly and I couldn't justify it over the M4 and/or a C7 Z06 (which is less money and way more car). Although it was definitely a better driving experience than my M4, it wasn't 50% better (which was the price premium).
If I found a really high quality used one, I might consider it... the problem is I don't like going used... it's kind of like eating someone's leftovers I actually think the M2 is a great value and I bet it will be closer to a 991 (base or S) than you might think for daily driving. The torque will be fun and the NA'd 991 doesn't have that.

I have driven the 991s and 4s and there is no way I would take an m2 over one for a weekend car unless I couldn't afford it
I've driven all the modern m cars, from the e46/92/1m/f80, not m2 obviously. They are great, but no comparison to the 991. The 991 is by far the best car I've driven. Would take it over almost anything It also wins the looks and sound contest by a landslide for me, and I think the m2 looks and sounds good |

Isn't it great that these days we have so many choices? Fact is this is probably the best time in automotive history. There are at least 6-10 great cars under 70k that will perform like crazy, deliver rock solid reliability and last for well over 150,000 miles. I really don't think you can go wrong these days regardless of what you go with. Heck even the Camaro has become one hell of a handling car, if it had decent ergonomics I would probably grab one.

To be honest I don't think comparing an M2 to a 911 should even be a realistic comparison.
For example, If could I afford a 911 I wouldn't even consider an M2. I think too many people are expecting the M2 to be some god like car but it's not. Once you start comparing it to cars higher up in the order, it is always going to fall short. But then, there's the price. And what it can do for the price. And that's why I bought one.
