Black painted metal emits heat faster than bare metal.

Nice job. Did mine a few months ago. Very satisfying and relatively easy mod.

Car radiators usually are a dark color so that they can get rid of the heat efficiently. Since the top of the muffler is still the shiny aluminum and there are shiny aluminum heat shields against the body of the car the top of the muffler should not be affected. Painting the underside of the muffler should help emit slightly more heat and dissipate the heat from the muffler faster than the aluminum. I'm not sure if painting it will make a significant change in muffler temperature and with the large stock muffler and still stock catalytic converter it should not be much of an issue.

I actually got used to it, lol.

Eventually I'll just swap out for a different exhaust, so it doesn't really bother me.

I painted mine about 8 months and 6000 miles ago. Still looks good, no flaking. Prep was not as extensive as OP. Washed, cleaned with degreaser, prime, paint. Did it in the driveway, car not lifted. It took more time to prep than to paint.

I painted mine 18 months ago with absolutely no preparation other than covering the tips with latex gloves. Still good as the day I did it.

You can use any high temp paint (just search barbecue paint on Google). You can pick it up from Lowes or Home Depot, 1 or 2 cans should do it. Did this to my E92 M3 stock exhaust back in the day without sanding it down and it was fine.

High temp paint usually has a curing process from what I have seen - has that not been necessary? Been wanting to do this to my corsa system on my E92 M3 - hangs even lower than the stock exhaust.

Rust-Oleum 7778830 High Heat Enamel Spray Paint

No priming recommended. Only 1 hour drying required before heating.

I'm at 1600 miles since application with no issues.

OP your work looks great!

I’m still on the fence about doing this mod. I ordered my car with the M Performance rear diffuser hoping it would also do a better job of covering the udder. I may just leave it until I decide on adding the Remus exhaust which looks like it doesn’t come down nearly as far and sounds much better.
