I think they have switched to Casteroil.
Yes surprise, dealers use whatever their franchise can get for cheapest, shock horror, they aren't thinking to provide a good quality oil to look after their customers engines!

I would probably avoid the oil a dealer uses on that basis

Not true. It is branded as BMW oil and is LL01 approved. Nothing wrong with dealer supplied oil.

Yeah, I have no reservations with the quality of BMW branded oil. The problem, if there is one, to me is that they back-specified this engine for LL01FE which is thinner (lower HTHS) for fuel economy reasons. This engine is most likely better off long term with a regular LL01 >=3.5 HTHS oil.

What I mean is yes they sell perfectly good "BMW" branded top up bottles in the showroom (at vastly inflated prices of course), but in the workshop they pump something unknown out of 55 gallon drums.

I'm sure it meets the spec, but it will be the cheapest they can buy not the best per se.

Agree with Chris719 on the FE thing, better to stay LL01 if you have no OPF (and aren't a diesel engine)

All my service records show the oil they used was LL01.

Of course you'd expect that.

But you can buy £5/L LL01 or £25/L LL01.

Which one do you think they use in the workshop?

I've seen the drums of the Castrol BMW oil in the US. In the UK they might do this but in the US the dealers use BMW oil. Do you think the dealers pay retail quart/liter prices for drums either way?

If you have an OPF definitely use LL04.

Yep my OPF is removed.

I just have such a bad mistrust of all things dealership after years of bad service, downright lies by completely useless service desks, over charging & general incompetence all round, shame as they ruin what is a great product.

I wouldn't even trust them to put the right oil in my lawnmower, regardless of what they put on the service sheet

Do you work for a BMW franchise by any chance?

People can make their own choices, A lease car or family beater, I'd put up with garbage BMW service to keep the lease firm happy, but a car I love and want to look after properly? No way.

Way better service here from say Ford or VW where they seem to employ people who know about cars and what they sell and maybe worked there for more than 3 months.

Bmw just employ 21 year old bimbos who's last job was at Starbucks who are clueless, but arrogant as they work for "premium brand BMW", and tell you any old crap.( you may like the bimbo bit).

Free coffee and pastries while they shaft you £150/hour for a spotty trainee to leave oily hand marks all over your interior and engine bay. Plus broken clips and trim not replaced properly.

Then they get paid bonus for selling extra work, that of course you probably don't need.

Really terrible.

So, just go the 4 year service (oil change) done and also got my pre-warranty expiration inspection performed. Seems like the rear diff seals are leaking on both sides. Tech said generally the right side is common, but in my case its both. Will get fixed under warranty.

Did they send any photographs or video of the inspection?

Depends what they call a "leak" or a slight weep/staining.

But if they fix it for free, all good.

Quaker State Euro Full Synthetic 5W-40 Motor Oil is a good one if you're in the states and will run about $30 total.

The word my tech used was "seeping". Yes, both seals will get swapped under warranty right before it expires in 2 weeks. Thats why I had it inspected.
