Apologies if this fits better in one of the Technical forums, wasn't sure which one to put it in.

New M2C - ~600 miles or so. Probably since day 1 I've noticed that , the steering wheel's movement back to center can be anything but smooth. It's weird and sometime feels alright, but in general, as I move the steering wheel back to center myself, the weight/resistance of the wheel during that process is not smooth - it almost feels as though the wheel is catching on something, as though the EPS system gets confused, or something along those lines.

It tends to occur around the same spot every time and can be either to the left or the right - but some days it feels like one side is behaving better than the other.

Not sure if this is just a quirk with the EPS, an issue with the wheel, or even an issue with the front end or tires. It's pretty minor, but I'm curious to see if I can learn anything from others.

You're not alone in noticing this.

In the M2C I noticed this in comfort mode only when I was just figuring the car out. It's a nice setting everywhere except at center and slightly-off-center where it doesn't feel heavy enough for this weight of car.
Does this 'notch feel' change in different modes?

I was familiar with this feeling in my M240ix at highway speeds but I recall it going away... maybe with some tire wear.

My tires are all heavily worn, but I'll feel it out in comfort steer mode on the highway this week.

My car also does this occasionally, I've never been able to figure out what triggers it. It happens when turning the wheel back to center after being held in a turn. I suspect it is increasing steering wheel turning speed after holding a consistent radius but I cant be sure. I miss the natural feel and predictability of hydraulic.

I was thinking of asking this as well. I feel this notchy feel on curvy roads, generally when steering back towards the center. But sometimes also in the other direction as well. It's almost like there are uneven zones in the steering. It "catches" once or twice like you describe. It's super annoying.

Not sure it's the same thing as you are feeling. But, this weird steering feel is the only thing that disappointed me about this car. Wasn't sure if it's just my car.

I have never felt what is being described here. I use comfort almost exclusively, unless I forget when the car defaults to sport.

I’ll try and look for it, but I’m fairly sure my car doesn’t do this.

This sounds exactly like what I feel.

Most noticeable on constant radius turns, where I will turn to say, 40 degrees or something, hold it there for a few seconds, and then slowly return back to center as the turn straightens out.

My Tires were overinflated a bit from the dealer so I've lowered them some. Issue hasn't gone away, although it may have improved very slightly.

If it's any consolation - this sounds exactly like what mine does. It's not something I notice say, turning in a parking lot after making a tight turn, but I notice it when taking longer medium curves on the road upon slowly returning the wheel to center - specifically I'm not letting the wheel return to center on it's own, but I'm slowly guiding it back as the turn unwinds and during this process, it can feel like it catches.

I have felt the same in my OG M2 on multiple occasions, It seemed to be worse when I flashed M2 Comp steering coding.

I figured it was an aspect of electric steering system, we have to agree BMW's implantation of it is not the best..

This was very noticeable on both my F31s, but I haven't noticed it on the M2C yet. On the F31s it was exasperated by worn tires or crappy tires (indy500 never again...).

Have never noticed this, and since yesterday I have been testing this on the winding roads around my house and got nothing. Did it in both Efficient and S modes for steering.

Ugh my car is making all sorts of noises too ...steering not notchy yet ....but makes a “clack” noise when I steer at slow speeds . Same with the brakes .

I think we are all going to experience all the things people are bringing up in these forums .

The other day someone wrote about going in reverse when trying to grab first .

Never happened to me once ...read the post and low and behold I went to put it in first and i was in reverse at a stop sign today !

Could it be we’re bringing on the problems ourselves after reading about them or am I just going loonie ...

I played around with it this weekend and think I have two issues occurring here.

One is a general lack of smoothness with the EPS as it gets closer to center - but this is pretty minor. The other is a hesitancy to actually return to center when the car has been turned left. This seems to be an issue with my car and hopefully they find something when I have it in for the break-in-service in 600 miles.

I have a BMW 330E F30 with these 2 problems. I've done a lot of research and I can't find a solution.
The dealer I went to did not diagnose any problem.

Had this with my two previous cars (2014 and 2016 F31)… Seems fine with the M2 after 18k miles.

I don't "feel" anything in my steering per se, its totally smooth through its turning radius in both directions, but it does need a bit of assistance to return to center in comfort mode sometimes. Just that last bit of radius to center.

If I stop the car and start very slowly, putting my foot on the brake to go slowly, turning the steering 45 degrees to the left or 45 degrees to the right, slowly, it feels like I have slight friction. It's not smooth. It's more visible to the left.
This problem I accept, although at times it is boring.

Another problem is when I turn the steering more or less 45 degrees to the left, with the car going very slowly, swinging the steering wheel slowly, it seems to have a groove. The steering seems to get stuck.

When I go on the highway, when I make a bigger and constant curve with the steering in this position (40/45 degrees), when the curve ends and I want to take the steering to the center, it gets stuck in that position for a few fraction of a seconds, I have to push harder at that moment to go to the center, but quickly it gets the same sensitivity again and I'm pressing harder. The car is unstable at these times and very unsafe.
