2017 M2

Broke my rear passenger spring yesterday on my 2017 M2, completely stock, southern tier NY and 44k miles. I didn't even know it was possible and luckily happened a few hundred yards from my BMW dealer. Definitely surprising and something that needs to be addressed.

I’d encourage you and anyone else affected to file a complaint with NHTSA. This is a potential safety issue. Imagine if it happens on a highway at 80. Should be a recall IMO.

They'd have to recall literally every BMW car made in the last 30 years.

I only see snapped rear spring posts in low mileage cars with any frequency in the M2 forum.

My M2 is in for a service today.
Video report shows both rear suspension coils have snapped.
Can't believe I didn't notice!

Pretty disappointed.
Like others I suspect this is road salt related.

The car is 4 year old, kept in a garage and with just over 26k on the clock.

Dealers having none of it - said bmw would just put it down to wear and tear.

Any advice? Can we complain to bmw direct maybe?

BMW won't do anything, though you could try pursuing their 12 year rust warranty policy. Otherwise a NHTSA complaint is the best way to go. If they get enough they'll investigate, approach BMW about it, and BMW will pay them off to go away. No other good options really.

I know I’m a bit late on the bandwagon, but just this morning I went out to go and get some shopping to find that my back right rear spring had snapped in half whilst sat on the drive over night! Not ideal but will be replacing both rear springs.

From last August, Offside spring snapped whilst setting off from home ... took out the wheel speed sensor cable

Dealer`s initial report was `corrosion` but when I reviewed their video footage I questioned them ... upon review they agreed that it was a clean break and replaced under the Insured Warranty

As it was a clean break the warranty replaced just the one, if it had been corrosion the recommendation would have been to replace both

Update : if deemed due to corrosion it would NOT have been covered by warranty

Just had the same with my car. Drivers side was broken due to corrosion. Passenger side was heavily corroded and likely to go soon. So, called BMW UK customer service and they would not entertain paying for the replacements and wouldn't let me speak to their supervisor. Car is an M2C Oct 2020 reg with 22k miles on it. To say I'm angry is a huge understatement. I won't be giving up on this though. Frankly its ridiculous the stance that BMW UK are taking on this. Still on the original brake pads, but springs are done! Are BMW saying its a consumable???? I plan to take further action, but undecided as to what yet. Thick end of £800 for them to fail again in a few years time. In my mind its either a design fault or a manufacturing fault (insufficient corrosion protection). Either way I won't be letting them off the hook that easily. Anyone else in the UK up for challenging them?

Any pictures ... to compare with mine ?

For corrosion to affect the metal to fail, it would have to be extremely extensive across the diameter of the coil

Please see attached .. I reported this to DVSA and they are refusing to issue a recall as they have no other reports of this happening!

Certainly a valid claim under warranty ... do you have the Insured Warranty ?

I got the same response as macbmer40 above. I also reported it to DVSA, but as I explained above they won't issue a recall as they don't regard it as a safety issue!! I'm now in discussion with a metallurgist in Glasgow to get a price for a report on the failure. I'll also be back in touch with DVSA to share this thread to prove its not an isolated incident .... p.s. my car was just out of warranty when this happened. 3 years 5 months, 24k miles
