I checked it.
I changed tires too. Run flat to non run flat. Stay the same.

Steering Issue - Sticky/Notch

Thanks for bringing up this issue. It has been bugging me for the last 2 weeks. I was going to take it to the dealer ( still might).

My car does the same ¨click¨noise when coming back to the center, like it "catches" as someone else mentioned. I have only noticed it happenig on the freeway at constant speeds ( 65 -90 mph), not at low speeds ( for now).

The weird thing is that it started doing it at around 4,500 miles on the odometer, I never felt it before and I believe I am always on alert for unsual cabin noises.

I recently switched to the M Performance V2 wheel and I was attributing the noise to a potential wrong installation by the shop where I took the car.

I feel somehow "better" now. Appreciate the post!

P.S Please kindly report if anyone on this thread finds a solution

This problem I accept, although at times it is boring.

Another problem is when I turn the steering more or less 45 degrees to the left, with the car going very slowly, swinging the steering wheel slowly, it seems to have a groove. The steering seems to get stuck.

When I go on the highway, when I make a bigger and constant curve with the steering in this position (40/45 degrees), when the curve ends and I want to take the steering to the center, it gets stuck in that position for a few fraction of a seconds, I have to push harder at that moment to go to the center, but quickly it gets the same sensitivity again and I'm pressing harder. The car is unstable at these times and very unsafe.
Update:
I can only feel this after driving 15 or 20 kilometers (9 or 12 miles).

I have this issue but can't isolate and replicate it consistently. I suspect it's something to do with the tires and a flat spot because the car sits for 1 or 2 weeks at a time. However I don't feel any vibrations or pulsations through the steering wheel.

I'll chime in and share that I've been having somewhat of a similar problem with my F80 M3

The best way to describe it is:
- Slightly numb, loose and unresponsive center zone (between 11 and 13)
- More resistance and stiffness when turning
- Lack of smoothness in steering feel from center to turn in (goes from too smooth to too stiff)
- At higher speeds, steering wheel stiffens too hard and ends up being not very precise
- At higher speeds, steering wheel sometimes feels like it gets stuck while turning, forcing you to give it a little push, and then it goes from too stiff to too loose

At the beginning of my ownership of the car it just started with a loose dead zone at the beginning without any stiffness. I coded EPS to GTS values and it fixed it for a while. Last week on a long road trip, halfway through it the steering started feeling a lot stiffer.

I've owned M2, M2C, M4 that afaik have the same steering rack and steering components and it never bothered me. I'm confident something is up but what pains me is that it's extremely hard to make a dealership technician understand the issue. For someone who never drives the car on a daily basis, he probably just assumes Sports car = Stiff steering and Center Dead Zone = Normal EPS

Whole thing is a bit of a headache. My next attempt is going for a full alignment with steering wheel centering, inspection of control arms and tie rods, re-calibration of steering angle sensor. If this doesn't fix it, might just try my luck and get the dealership to replace the entire rack under warranty. Unfortunately, if it's a defective eps motor, you can't buy those standalone.

If anyone has anymore suggestions, would be great to hear!

My 2021 M135i Xdrive has the exact same issue, and the dealership had replaced my steering rack and steering column. However that didn't solve the notchness of the steering when re-entering. Has anyone solve this issue? Or it will go away overtime?

Same issue on my 2018 M2. I notice it the most when making a slight turn to the left on the highway (either changing lanes or following the bend in the highway). The steering wheel briefly becomes stiff (sticks) and then breaks loose, like pushing past a notch or binding point.

I took it to get an alignment at a third-party shop and it helped the steering stability but not this problem. I'm thinking of bringing it to the dealership. I know it will be a pain to explain the issue to the techs because it can be pretty subtle sometimes.

Anybody else have any luck with this issue? Thanks

reviving this thread.

I recently picked up an M2C and I too have noticed the steering get "stuck" for a fraction of a second when coming out of a bend at about 75 MPH. Seems like the front wheels tramline and get stuck on some invisible track or unevenness on the pavement. It also makes for a very rough transition as you almost have to put some muscle to get it "unstuck". Not a good feeling at 5:30 in the am.

Anyone found a fix?

Same problem!

Hi all
Has anyone found a solution to this problem? I have the same problem, it is driving me mad and this seems to be a common issue that no one seems to be able to resolve.
Did you manage to fix it?
Thanks in advance.

I've since replaced my stock comp wheels to the much lighter 437M and although it still happens from time to time, it does not seem to be as dramatic as it was with the stock wheels. Not a fix, but definitely an improvement.

My 2016 does the same. I bought it used a couple months ago. I put new conti tires and alignment. Car has camber plates and I am currently running 2.6” camber front. This is the only thing that bothers me about the car, the rest, I love.

This may be the steering gear adjustment bolt may have shifted or been set incorrectly. I’ve been having a clunking issue in my steering and came across this thread: https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1637057

Essentially if the bolt is too loose it causes clunking over small, low speed bumps. If it’s too tight it causes the wheel to be difficult to turn and does not return to center correctly.
