TPMS Malfunction

So I just swapped my wheels for the winter set (on 437Ms), and filled the tires and drove off to reset the tire pressure. I hit about 49% and the reset got hung up. I pulled off the road, hit the reset again and drove off only to get stuck at 49% again. The TPMS in this set of wheels are 2 years old and has never been an issue reseting or reading the correct pressures every year. Anyone encounter this? Even if its a faulty sensor, how do I identify which one its is short of replacing all of them which will be a pain in the ass and will cost $$?

For now I've shut the car off and will try tomorrow

So this morning I was up early to drop my daughter off to the airport, and when i get in the car its says TPMS malfunction. Fine whatever, there is no chance in hell I not driving the comp early on a crisp sunday morning when the back roads are empty.

I drive a bit (maybe 10 min) and hit reset pressures again, and all of a sudden the pressures can be read within a minute. So, it looks like whatever the issue was, resolved itself. Maybe a tpms woke up from its summer hibernation. Happy sunday folks!

I just had this almost exact same issue yesterday (mine with my F22 228). Tire reset 'stalled' at 49% for several miles, I cancelled it out while still driving, and when I got to a spot where I intended to try a on-off reset it was already reading pressures. For me, the 'stall' occurred while sitting at a stoplight and I thought it was somehow connected to sitting unmoving for too long, but that never screwed up the reset in the past.

In my case I was running through back roads with no stops really. Both times it hung up at 49%. It all worked out this morning though.

I have yet to figure out my TPMS malfunction. Dealer could also not figure it out and I gave up.

Read the codes and see what it says. It could be something really simple as 1 of the batteries is dead which seems to be what it is since it was fine on the other wheels and you switched to winters and 1 of the tpms is dead. So all you have to do is see which one is dead and change it.

Or could be the Radio control module. Or could be something else like mine that no one knows what it is. I still think mine is the RC module but the dealer said they changed and still doing it but I am gonna do it myself and see because i think they are full of shit.

In my case I thought perhaps one wheel wasn't registering so it hung up. But when the pressure readings came through, it was for all 4 wheels. So who knows what my situation was. I'm going for service on Thursday and will have him read the code. Generally when it is 1 bad tpms, then you'll see it on the screen (no reading for that 1 tire). Hope you figure yours out.

pretty sure when 1 TPMS goes bad in these cars you get TPMS malfunction. You can't get a reading unless all 4 are working

Any update from the dealer on the code? And just curious - does your winter wheel set have OEM sensors or aftermarket?

You know, I completely forgot to ask if there was a code. My tpms has been functioning fine. These are on my winter set of 437Ms and I swapped them out with Huf IntelliSens brand in 2021. I've also used this brand in other BMWs where the sensor went bad and have had good luck with them.
