What is this Modded 2017 M Performance Edition 6 spd Worth?

Yeah, I'm OK with getting beat up for asking the question. So don't worry about my feelings.

I bought this car new and wanted to keep it long term. But within the first year someone pulled out in front of me and there simply wasn't enough time or space. Front passenger side impact. No airbag deployment, but $6k worth of damage and a Carfax (which is attached btw).

So at less than 5k miles I decided to start modding. And tracking. This car has been to Homestead and Sebring numerous times. The car already had the M Performance Coil overs from the factory, so I added the full Dinan package with Turbo, intake, intercooler and piggy back tune. Ran the car like that for 18 months. During that time I also added most of the IND interior updates like the LCI dash, the Alcantara and carbon bits and the I mounted the M Performance Exhaust remote between the two cupholders.

During Covid, in 2020 I switched to Bootmod3 and updated the hardware. I added the FabSpeed sportcat 200 cel, the Eventuri V2 and went full FBO. I went with FTP pipes, the TurboSmart V11 BOV, and the XDI-35 HPFP. I also added the Spool Stage 2 LPFP for good measure. But I kept the Dinan turbo (which was already starting to fail - I just didn't know it yet).

During this time I went full track mode. I added the seats from AMX Performance in Europe, the roll cage from PSDesigns along with their Rear Seat Delete Kit. The Gyrodisc rotors went on. i added a custom brake cooling duct setup with a special carbon undertray from BP Engineering. The car has stainless steel brake lines and a set of Apex FL-5 track wheels on a stud conversion kit. I added Schroth harnesses and hit the track.

The car was fast. So fast it had a hard time getting fuel during Sebring's long hard right hand sweeper (turn 17) with less than 1/2 a tank of gas. I learned about M2 fuel starvation issues the hard way. After a few events it happened. Engine failure. Cracked piston.

Now at about 20k miles, that's how the built motor came to be. CP Carillo rods and pistons along with VAC bearings. I also added the Insane Performance crank hub and the Kies N55 seal guard. Good as new I thought. But no. Unfortunately, the car was burning a lot of oil after the rebuild. After all that, turns out the Dinan turbo was fried.

I replaced with the stock OEM turbo (yeah, no big turbo for me). And the Bend Calibration Ultimate BM3 Ethanol sensor kit that integrated with Bootmod3 Flex Fuel maps. At the next track event (at Sebring again) the M Performance coil over failed. It literally broke / unscrewed itself and leaked all the fluid. Instead of replacing it with the same thing, I upgraded to the Team Schirmer Nitron R3 coilover track pack, complete with bushings and kinematics.

The car was definitely in full track mode now. Unfortunately, my bad luck wasn't done. It overheated on track and was never the same. Water pump failed. Turned out later the block cracked. Rebuild #2. This time under warranty thank god - from the first rebuild. I bought a new block, and my engine builder built the motor again. At no additional cost.

The car now has 600 miles on it since then. The total is 26,450 miles. I'm running break in with the stock fuel pump, downpipe, intake, intercooler and stock tune. It's never asked for oil. And everything looks good so far.

I know what this car is worth to me. And I know what I have into it. It's well over six figures and you're welcome to guess. What would it be worth to you? That's what I'm curious about. And why? What are the things that make it worthless or super valuable to you?

Thanks in advance!

Not a car I would be interested in. An accident, heavy track use, and a lot of repairs.

I know exactly what you're saying in that regards Dan

I own a lightly modded M2 and I plan to keep it that way

I would post it at a price that is about what you would get for it if it were stock, & add 15-20% of the total you've spent on mods. Give it a few weeks/months and see if it moves.

It also comes down to whether or not 40-50k is worth selling the car at all.

Don't get me wrong, that's a ton of money but in the car world… I'm not sure what you'd buy for equal value that is better. Maybe a C7 vette?

I would keep the car & have fun with it. It's beautiful, tastefully modified & a pure turbo away from being a missile on the highway & a perfect drift car or even a great track car.

I am like you. I have a ton of cosmetic mods plus wheels and a strut bar. But the drivetrain and suspension are all stock.

This is a sweet setup. I think there are plenty of people who would love to buy it regardless of the forum feedback about mods.

I think 6speed_M2 nailed it in terms of the formula for getting the price. For $55k to the right buyer it might be worth it for someone ready to move on to a new experience. If someone offered just $50k for it then it becomes more difficult to determine if it's even worth selling considering the money and effort that's already in the car.

That's right. Once the accident happened, everything changed. And exactly the reason I transitioned to using it vs. trying to preserve it. That said, it's as close to a new, stock version of the car as you could get right now.

Turbo has less than 1,000 miles, motor is still in break in period and the suspension will be changed back to the M Performance coilovers for street duty as the Nitron's are overkill without track days. It's a bit of a reset right now...

I can say with confidence I would never sell the car for $40k or $50k. Probably not even M2 Comp. money. I feel like I would be gifting the car to someone else.

The sound system, the radar detectors, the laser blockers and the PPF alone is over $10k. It's all practically invisible (on the inside and outside). Add the seats and interior mods and that money doubles. The wheels and M Performance aero package with custom paint work are another $10k. That's without any performance upgrades...

$50k won't change my life and I still really enjoy the car.

Hell of a cautionary tale sir.

If you could get your number, what would you replace it with?

It seems to me you built your ultimate OG M2 track car. Why not enjoy it now that it’s developed?

That's the right question. And the answer dictates the path I'm on now, and is certainly one I've had to come to terms with...

The N55 just doesn't like the track. The cooling and the fact that it's an open deck motor is problematic. In short - it breaks. And it will continue to break.

Even when it doesn't have issues, I have to keep the gas tank over 1/2 full on any track with right hand sweepers. Only fix is a secondary surge tank. Schirmer does that for their M cars in Germany for the Ring - but I don't want a fuel tank in the cabin with me.

An M2 Comp is likely the answer. But I'm not a fan of the S55 for different reasons. Plus the swap would be expensive and I'd be buying more parts.

I finally listened to my buddies and coughed up the dough to buy a GT4 in this market. I immediately beat all my personal bests on street tires the first time out at Sebring - and nothing went wrong.

Now the M2 can pivot to street car - which is where I think it will be much more at home. The shove from the turbo down low is something the P car can't match on the street.

That's partially what I'm doing. It's certainly the best way to get your money back. Especially in this market. 60% - 70% of new seems to be the going rate for most things... but I'm only selling track related parts right now. Anything street I'm holding onto until I make a final decision.

As for the cautionary tale part - YES! If you're tracking your N55b M2, modded or stock, my advice is to quit while you're ahead and buy a Vette or a Porsche. It's cheaper.

I think you are on the best path forward in that you are willing to start selling the parts you don’t need anymore. Using it as your street car after you strip it back down is a great plan.

Not that it changes anything about what you’re saying, but are you aware of other examples of similar issues from other tracked OG M2s?

As someone whose been through ups and downs with a project/build as you described, I understand how it changes your perspective. Thanks for sharing, a lot of people just move on and don’t want to talk about it Lol

If you are looking to sell, post it on the F8X forum.
Don’t ask me why I know.

Yep, I bought my M2 track car here.
