He also told me that the car was so special, I would need the full warranty, because oil changes are very complicated. "All computers" is what he said... smh... Nice guy, but fuck. |

I am neither for nor against following "recommended" break-in. But my own life experience suggests that:
1. if recommended break-in could be proven to be even mildly effective at limiting factory warranty claims or improving long term reliability ratings, it would not be left up to us idiots to decide whether or not to follow them. 2. In the US, there is a decal permanently applied to your visor because consumers are stupid and don't read the manual. Why would manufacturers trust us to perform a critical break-as outlined in the manual. 3. The most egregious purveyors of "fake science" HowStuffWorks, Popular Mechanics, The Car Connection, AutoEvolution, The Hartford, Engine Labs and even Subaru of America all subscribe to the best recommendations for break-in restrictions but at far shorter periods. As little as a 100 - 500 miles. All while being completely immune from the wrath of outraged Engineers. NOONE is immune from the wrath of outraged engineers EVER. Once more, I am neither for nor against following "recommended" break-in. Last edited by silverds; 07-01-2019 at 02:40 PM.. |

Appreciate the feedback. I think I'll be fine; I was well below the recommended 5500rpm limit and it was a gradual acceleration, steady, but gradual. Not like I stomped the accelerator and went WOT.

Sounded reasonable to me, but everyone on these internet forums is calling bullshit. Does anyone have any actual information about this? Before/after dyno would be interesting and more convincing than a bunch of internet experts incorrecting each other. I found this, which seems to agree with the "bullshit" angle: https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1544580 Also found this, which seems entirely reasonable:https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...9&postcount=12 Last edited by Zuelude; 08-03-2019 at 05:05 PM.. |

I just completed my break in period, did not exceed 5500rpm, did not go full speed LOL, but touched 180kmh a couple of times. Fine. It's called breaking in. Not laming in. This evening my 275km weekly commute, finally right foot touching the carpet, compared to my F80M3, the M2C is scary as shit on the wet. Loving it Already looking forward to Friday going home

There is a reason manufacturers still recommend a 1200 mile break in period. I think BMW’s engineers know more about their engine, it’s materials and manufacturing tolerances than the vast majority of people on the internet! At the end of the day though it’s your engine so make your own choice. |

The fact is, the tolerances are much improved with today's engines and most do not require the "gentle" 1,200 miles that BMW recommends (and then I think they say take it easy for the next 2,000 or so miles or Kms AFTER THAT). A little crazy.... Of note, the brakes however do need to be broken in But the fact is, too many people go crazy with their brand new cars and end up messing them up big time - I personally think that's the biggest reason for the break-in requirements - alas, it is one of those things that can be a fun and never ending discussion here and on the interwebs. *early versions of included maintenance only called for oil changes every two years/15K - in fact, as soon as BMW started paying for maintenance, suddenly their requirements changed Of note, my 1995 325i had a 1,200 mile service (as did all BMWs I think) before BMW decided that only M cars would get this. Engineers changing their mind? Or Accountants getting involved

They changed engine oil as well. Whats the use of 5500rpm max if you only break in the rear diff ? Then it should be max speed only to be honest. What I do not understand is that by no means the car was restricted. Pushed a couple of times till full boost to let the torque come in, went like any normal S55.
