Australian M2 tuning experiences?
Hi guys,
I'm hoping to get some first hand experience/feedback . I'm about to flash my M2 with BM3. I have all bolt on mods and was planning to flash stage 2 93 tune. I read a post over at the M3 forum stating whilst our fuel is 98RON it is actually nowhere near equivalent to the 93 Octane fuel these tunes are developed for and that flashing aggressive 93 tunes is a bad idea for us. Since that I've held off and am considering getting the Stage 1 93 tune instead. Incidentally, did a bit of reading and learnt that Australian fuel standards are the lowest in the OECD nations, wtf. We haven't even revised them for 15 years and our threshold for sulphur content is so high, like 15x worse than places like China, USA, Europe. Has anyone got any experience using stage 2 93 tunes with our fuel? Thanks

Ive tried stage 2 / 2+ and have settled on E20 Stage 2+.... give the best power with great logs. Hitting 17PSI with 12.5 degrees timing. 100-200 in 9sec Flat. |

I guess its really only the Octane aspect that really matters in this, my car is full bolt on so I suppose could be stage 2 once tuned, but whether that's a 91 or a 93 tunes seems to be where the problems lie. I assume Ill end up running the Stage 2, 91 tune using our 98RON fuel. What is required to run E20? Are there negatives to this? The other thing people have stated is to use boosters but I'm wary of this, based on no real knowledge, just seems undesirable to have to add products to the fuel.

I’m running the Stage 2 93 map. No apparent issues thus far. Haven’t done any logging though.

Not stage 2, but I've been running BM3 Stage 1 93 octane for 6 months without issues. I mostly use BP Ultimate but I've had a couple of tanks of V-Power. Never had any misfires or issues. I have logged too and they looked clean.
I'd expect the issues would be prevalent across different stages if we had any major issues with our fuel quality. |

Being new to tuning can someone please advise which tune I would use?
I’m not going to do any mods (at this stage anyway), if I want to go fast I’ll get on my bike I just want to get the “hidden” horsepower and torque out. I imagine I would run the stage 1 tune but do I use 91 or 93? I only have ever used premium unleaded. Thanks Gents. H |

@atlas That's good to hear, though it probably wouldn't hurt to do a few logs 😉
I've done the Stg 1, 91 and now the Stg 2, 91 tune. Overall I'm not happy with it, but it's early days. There is definite improvement in midrange (it's pretty savage, I got sideways out of nowhere yesterday 😬 and probably top end, hard to test in built up areas however. BUT, there is a definite issue with immediate throttle response when re-applying throttle after lifting off the accelerator, at 1500rpm-2000rpm there is nothing. This was always there in comfort for me but now it's in all modes. It's consistent/constant and it's a deal breaker. Its as if there is a second where the throttle does nothing then a lurch (it's not turbo lag). A couple of times in Sport + I've gotten to near 6000rpm and paddle shifted up, only for it to take a good second or more. So annoying. It ruined the burbles to the point of being ridiculous. No matter how I tried I can't get it back to how it was before, so I've disabled them in all modes. They're pointless anyway so this is a positive but the fact it was changed so radically is irritating. Finally (god damn whinge I know) Stg 2, 91 has knocked cold start off, and I tried setting it to OEM but its still gone. So yeah, I'm less than thrilled but hoping to work through the issues. Have done logs might send them to PTF.

First up, I would only run 98 fuel, even stock. Do any of the issues present running the stock map?
Then I would try the 93 maps. I ran stage 1 with no supporting mods and it felt great. Didn't have any issues, but yes burble was more aggressive. I then added my mods and flashed stage 2 and again no issues. I have my cold start set to custom rpm of 970 and it works well. |

Fwiw, I flashed my stock tune back and the car drives well again. Definitely missing the crazy mid to top end pull now, but throttle response is back. The car was just so awful to drive with the tunes loaded that it's not worth it.
@atlas just to add, I only ever run 98RON fuel but was using the 91 tunes as a test before moving to 93, just to allow logging etc I'm case of timing/ignition issues due to our substandard fuel. Having seen the other member on the forums whose tuned engine blew I'm feeling tuning the car has been an epic fail and not worth it at all.

Hopefully joining the flash tuning team soon in my '17 LCI DCT M2. Mods are:
Wagner Evo2 IC Wagner Catted DP BMS intake Milltek Cat-Back Exhaust JB4 Map2 I haven't decided between BM3/MHD/Evotech Dyno tune @ International Auto Haus. I will only be using 98RON BP/Caltex and will be removing cold start as well as reducing the burbles. Anyone with same mods and what path did you take? |

Ive put my M2 back to stock and my goodness the car is far less responsive n powerful and if your thoughts of tuning it, do it at a heart beat.
If you want a wagner ic / catted DP and Chargepipe $2k hit me up. MHD is my choice and is fantastic flexible and support is great. |
