For some people more power is always more enjoyable if that's what they want and they have the means to actually drive the car in an environment where they can enjoy that power.
After you had 400+ whp, did you then wish you have 500+ whp? That's the main point he was making. It's a never ending race for more and more HP which is dumb because for the majority of people they'll never be able to use all that hp.

I get that, but its not a pointless metric for enjoyability.

And there are diminishing returns for power and enjoyability. Sure, 400whp is great, but 900whp is not. Either is 700 or 800. Very few people would enjoy driving that on the street in an STi. No one would enjoy autocrossing that car on a tight course.

There's definitely a sweet spot in power and that spot shifts quite a bit depending on the car and what you're going to be using it for. Last week I drove the m240i, M2, and m2c back-to-back and while the power is certainly similiar the feeling of the cars are extremely different.

..and you didn't keep your STI because they aren't fun cars at all to drive on a day to day basis. Once you're over the feeling of thrust, all you're left with is the car's character. So you either give it even more power in a neverending battle, or you accept that your car plows around corners and sucks to drive in most conditions (source: I too had an STI and I too, tuned it)

Uhh, that's not why I got rid of it. And mine was quite fun to drive on a day to day basis. I guess we were in very different situations when we owned ours.

This was over 10 years ago so I'm not really going to compare how it drove compared to current vehicles being released.

STI is balls slow stock (I owned one as well) on the street as indicated by it's slow 5-60 mph time as the 0-60 numbers they get for those cars are only attainable via driveline shocking launches. From a red light stop you will be left behind the average V6 sedan unless you flog it. A tune makes that slow car fast so yeah it's a bit of a game changer. M2C is fast stock.

Who cares if the M340 is JUST as fast as the M2C? We all know which is the better car for performance type driving.
I seriously doubt anyone would cross-shop the two.

That's for the OG M2. The M2C weighs 150 pds more than that.

The car is larger than its 3 series predecessors: more than 2 inches longer, wider, and taller. No manual transmission will be offered . I don't care for the styling, either.

But nevertheless, 0-60 in 4.2 seconds puts it right up there with the M2C (and the OG M2 even more so) in a straight line. I'm sure it will lack the more purist feel of the M2 (and personally, I'd take the M2 even if it was slower in a straight line), but I'm still just a bit annoyed that BMW has blurred the lines to such an extent -- particularly because every fourth car on the road is a 3 Series and with the newly condensed lineup, I'm sure we'll see a trillion of these.
You should mention OG M2 in that too, it will go 4.1 sec 0-60

Show some !

I really don't like where BMW is headed with the kidney shape on the front of the new cars. (M2C included)

Surely they can keep the heritage of the original and work around that. It's a part of the BMW design. The new stretched kidney design is starting to remind me of a Kia.

If this is the design direction I'll likely keep my 2018 M2 long term and just mod it.

As a previous owner of a 135i, and a current owner of an F30 335 I can say an ///M is and will always be different. I've only driven an M once which is the f82 totally different cars

One of the biggest issue with non-M after BMW uses electric steering is the feel, way less connected compare to BMW of the ole.

Can't say about 340i yet since I have not driven it, but all of my friends actually switch to Audi cause of this very issue. And all of the loaners I've come across give me the "bleh" driving experience.

True but it's definitely a step in the right direction from the F30 which bodes well for the upcoming M3/M4.

Nowadays, a lot of cars can go 0-60 in the 4 secs range but that doesn't make it a sports car or anything. It all depends on what you can do around the curves.

We've come a long way as far as engineering and the ability to make power. 4.2 sec 0-60 is good for a sedan but then again, it is "M Performance" and costs $55k and up. Just think, a 2.0T Audi A4 or a $40k Tesla does does about 5.5 sec and that goes to show 4.2 sec isn't that crazy fast anymore.

Problem I have with the 3series is size. Not as in weight, but the physical size of the car. They feel too big now. M2 is that perfect E46 M3 size.
