The new M340i will be nearly as quick as the M2C in a straight line

The upcoming G20 3 series lineup is getting simpler and will feature only the 330i and the new M340i. The M340i will get 382 horsepower and purportedly hit 0-60 in 4.2 seconds (https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1541176).

The car is larger than its 3 series predecessors: more than 2 inches longer, wider, and taller. No manual transmission will be offered . I don't care for the styling, either.

But nevertheless, 0-60 in 4.2 seconds puts it right up there with the M2C (and the OG M2 even more so) in a straight line. I'm sure it will lack the more purist feel of the M2 (and personally, I'd take the M2 even if it was slower in a straight line), but I'm still just a bit annoyed that BMW has blurred the lines to such an extent -- particularly because every fourth car on the road is a 3 Series and with the newly condensed lineup, I'm sure we'll see a trillion of these.

It is amazing that they were able to increase the horsepower on the 340 from 340 hp to 382 hp. Can you imagine an M240 with 382 hp. That would really blur the lines between the M Performance cars and the real M cars.

Just wait until the new Gen M cars come out man. Your comparing a new car not available yet to current models.

For M purposes, the most important "lines" to be blurred are not 0-60 times. Pretty sure the other sorts of lines will remain clear.

Every generation is faster than the previous. This is not new . E92 N54 335i was at least as fast as an E46 M3 in a straight line, but it was not the same driving experience.

I don't care how fast the boat is. I prefer driving cars. Cars with manual transmissions.

I don't see the point. It's 0-60 time. It doesn't make it a sports car.

These days, most production "performance" cars are below 5 seconds 0-60, which is really quite incredibly if you think about it. Those remaining tenths don't mean much, and in a real street race it would probably come down to reaction time and launch method.

It's all about marketing. HP and ET to help distinguish my $50K car from your $50K car.

Lots of cars are as fast or close enough. Heck, a new Honda Accord has more power and does 0-60 faster than a lot of past M cars.

As @bi0hazard points out, there's a lot more to any M car than pure drag strip time. Even the M2, which is probably the closest to the production 2 than any other M derivative, is a lot more than the sum of its parts.

Completely expected. Has happened many times over the years and the reason for this is that M is not solely and exclusively concerned with straight-line 0-60 and back to 0 again before a cop or stoplight .

Sadly, I see a lot of Turbo non M owners after adding a tune start to think their cars are superior to Ms. Also, majority of M owners are usually seen in a parking lot doing "2step".
Straight line is meaning less. BMW and other manufacturers invest alot of money and time developing their sports car chassis on Nurburgring. We pay big dollars for that too. Let's appreciate them for being an overall package than worry about whose tootsie is longer.

Looks like it weighs like 100lbs less than the M2. Kinda funny for such a big 4-door car.

Curb weight of 3,764 whereas the M2 is either 3,450 or 3,505 depending on transmission.

I think you're looking at the old M340i figures. I just googled to get the new figures.

This.

Who cares about 0-60 times!? As useless as those foolish Ring lap times.

It's about how they feel to drive. Forget the numbers. Look at the M240i it's as fast as the M2—except that the M240i is terribly boring and uninteresting to drive like a sloppy sponge.

Who cares. You'll get used to the power within 2 weeks and wish it had more. Power is a pointless metric for enjoyability.

Depends on the kind of car. I guess it's not the sole metric for enjoyability.

It absolutely is not pointless. My STi was significantly more enjoyable to drive with 400+whp vs. 215 stock.

For some people more power is always more enjoyable if that's what they want and they have the means to actually drive the car in an environment where they can enjoy that power.
