But can't get over how crappy the 982 4 cylinders are. 981s with the 6 cyl are quite old now.

Leaning toward the 991...
lol...I just sold my 982 that I bought after selling my 981 and yeah it didn't sound as good on the outside, but other than that....

the turbo'd 4 banger 982 was better than the flat six 981 S that I had in just about every aspect.... except maybe impressing the kids on the corner with exhaust noises, so people who are into that I can see why you might think that.

and btw, the 981's(2014-2016) are just as old as most of the 991's(2011-2019)

982s are really the same as 991.2s. 981 is more analogous to the 991.1. Obviously the engines are different in the 982 but so are the engines in the 991.2. One the surface they are refreshed models (981vs982 and 991.1vs991.2), but it’s what you don’t see is what has been changed.

Yeah I talk all prices in, so a base 911 is I think 150ish plus taxes. A Roma will go past 300K optionless.

No and no. They are appreciating and maintenance has been a non-issue. But yeah they are not the greatest driving cars unless on great roads but just LOOK at it.

Have run three different six cylinder Cayman`s in the past and driven several 982`s, both 2.0l and 2.5l. The 2.0l is a little `laggy` especially at low revs when pulling out of junctions. The 2.5l is far better all round and both 982`s drive better than a 987 & 981 apart from my ex. 981 GT4

I would take a 982 2.5l GTS, more than a performance match for a 981 GT4 and as an overall package

I don`t believe that `you` get our Gasoline Particulate Filters in the exhaust do you ? The UK is having a few issues with these `blocking` and not being covered by warranty

i'd take a cgts 4.0 over a 992 carrera S. But thats just me. The lighter weight and NA motor seem more appealing. im not sure about trans but i've heard the 6 spd is better than the 911's 7 spd manual.

no doubt about that. the 911s definitely look more 'high end' than the 718s... the lightbar tail especially.

Exactly. It really depends if one values 'style' or substance. Sound is overrated but lots of ppl think that is virtually the only thing that matters (it doesn't, HANDLING is if we're talking about sportscars).

As such, the 4 banger 'failed' because the Germans underestimated ppl's fragile ego and the need to be vain, as most reviews confirm what you said about the 4>>old 6.

Yeah, the 4banger cayman makes the top 10 best sports cars like every year…for a reason, cyl count is over rated and these arent laggy Subaru engines you gotta rev to 2800 before they start waking up.

About 1.5 years ago, I paid $34K for my CPO'd 2011 Cayman Base 6MT with 67K miles and about every major option minus leather wrapped interior panels.
The car is nearly 60% 911 and most every part I've pulled off the car (and there have been many) say "997".

The car is raw and visceral, yet totally comfortable enough and reliable for me to take on 10+ hour drives. She ain't very fast (maybe mid 13s@102mph), but most everyone thinks it's way faster than it is solely because of the near exotics car looks and Porsche name. While not fast, she leaps extremely off the line with 4500-5000rpm launches and gets to 60 quickly (low low 5s) and sounds amazing doing it. But this car isn't about the power, it's about the handling. It's bonkers because of the light weight (just under 3,000lbs as measured on a local truck scale), small body, mid engine balance and traction, strong and linear brakes, and excellent suspension. I love having a high revving (7500rpm redline) naturally aspirated lower torque motor because I can fine tune the power vs traction in turns which is something not easily done with a turbo and is likely why all the super Porsches remain NA.

For what it can do stock, which mine is down to the base suspension, the car is a steal for the money, IMO. I've done a good amount of maintenance and preventative maintenance to it, but the car so freaking easy to work on and parts are not too crazy cost wise in most cases.

My Cayman was sold in late 2010 which means it's been on the road for 13 years now. It doesn't rattle and the interior and exterior are in stellar shape minus some minor scratches on the rear interior panels. I'm the 6th owner of this car and probably the only one that's really cared for it. The build quality of these cars is impressive. Everything is robust, heavy, and direct. All inputs (steering, shifter, throttle, brakes) are VERY heavy but also very connected and/or linear. The body panels themselves are very thick and have no give. The car could easily be 150lbs+ lighter if Porsche didn't use such thick sheet metal and so much noise insulation everywhere.

I don't know why there needs to be a comparison. The 911 and Cayman serve different purposes.

The 911 is a sports car that can double as a Grand Tourer, the rear seats fold for storage and the frunk is quite roomy. It is, to my knowledge, the only legitimate sports car that offers back seats for children, 70% of my driving so far is with wife, 2 kids aged 12 and 8 and a picnic basket and blanket.

Doing that in a Cayman is very difficult, even if there's just the two of you. The reward, on solo drives, is the handling.

Cute kid! I hope he has your wife's personality. I kid...I'm sure you're much friendlier in person.

it might as well be a 3 speed manual, i read the gears are so long you could drive in only 1st gear all day in town?

I got into a Pcar for suspension development but I can say now that I will never sell this car. The NA 4.0 is sublime, the PDK is solid (I leave the manuals for my older cars), and the sound is just epic. I'm pretty certain that one of the turbo options wouldn't have this much appeal to me. Was just going to do suspension work and then planned to move on - well I now have a full aero kit, Essex/AP Racing brakes, full iPE exhaust, full control arm replacement, and just got it back not long ago from DeMan getting the motor stroked out to 4.5. The Nitron Elec-Tron R3 kit is on the car and we are starting testing and have a few more big things in the works for post Super Lap Battle. I never was that BMW guy that had Porsche as the ultimate goal - but can say some of them are worth the hype..

The engine is still lackluster relative to the price. It feels so low rent compared to the 6 cyl it replaced. I can't fault Porsche as overbearing govt regulations are out of their control, but what does irk me are the continuous price hikes (outpacing inflation) on a car that's a sh*ttier version of what it was 10 yrs ago when the 981 (same car with diff engine) was released.

The 718 S costs more than 2x my car and surely isn't 2x more fun to drive, not even close. Would rather get a used 911...sure it'll be older but has a proper flat 6, iconic looks/pedigree, unique handling, etc.

You need to do a few things to the 6 cylinder in the 981 to get it to feel proper. That power/torque dip in that engine is annoying as hell and that is the general RPM you are in when just driving around town. It is a lot like the 4 cylinder in the FR-S/86/BRZ where that annoying power/torque dip right in the middle of the RPM band before they updated the engine recently to finally fix it.

To anyone complaining about long gears, no owner drives to 7,800/8000 all day every day in the GTS 4.0/GT4/Spyder. That is dumb, stop bringing up that argument. Just like no one expects a GT3/GT3RS/4RS/SRS owner to go 9k RPMs all the time, you will damage your eardrums. I only see people who don't own the car, complain about tall gearing.

I find the gearing too long. 1st and 2nd is fine but 3rd, sweet jesus, if hustling I can exit in third, floor it and I am doing 140KMH ..... like really? It's one of the reasons I went PDK because honestly one rarely even needs to change gears.
