Replacement windows
Hey everybody! So the wife and I are looking to get replacement windows on our house. I had a company come out and measure the windows. that company was Window World. The guy was a very good salesman. Had me sold. Granted anything is better than my twenty year old aluminum single pane windows.
What are your thoughts on replacement windows and who to go with. I worked for a company that dealt with MI Windows and PGT Windows. Thank you everyone! |

When I went to the Pella store and checked out the wooden framed vinyl clad style, the wood felt like balsa wood.
I don't have any advice. But I had a painter make some windows I think out of Brazilian Mahogany with oil based paint (Fine Paints of Europe) hardware from a company up in New England, Those windows are solid and the pricing wasn't much different then using a replacement window company. Florida and hurricanes and U.V. - just research until you know everything... |

No wood, it just harbours mold.
TBH I have never seen a case where replacing windows makes a lick of financial sense. The energy savings will take 100 yrs to cover the explosive cost of new windows. |

Biggest thing I would say is use a company that has been around in your area for awhile, and will be able to stand behind any warranty issues.
Replacing old single pane windows from the early 70s in my house in Calgary did make the house noticeably more even and comfortable temp wise in the winter, and our bills did go down a bit. The larger things were, there was a very noticeable external noise reduction, and as mentioned, the rooms felt more even and consistent in temperature, and we didn't have ice buildup on the inside of the windows any longer. As well, many of the old windows were difficult to operate, and at least 2 had broken either a pane, or hardware/ handles, which is what prompted us to get them replaced. Depends on the exterior of your home.
I didn't listen, and just said "Yes, Dear" even though I KNEW that getting the "fitted" windows was a better option than trying to match the stucco. It was a little more expensive, but every time I look at the outside of the main window into the house, I see that 2-3" of stucco that doesn't match, and isn't even all the way around. Getting the one that includes the 2-3 inches of vinyl that overhangs and covers where the stucco was cut to remove the old window is SO much better. |

It depends on the type of windows as well, ie casements, or custom sizes to change configs or wood, or just purely replacement for sliders. Id use pella or anderson as I like their quality and options.

Use a reputable company that has their own dedicated workers, not temps or 'contractors'. DK if they pay for themselves on the energy savings, but the improvement in utility makes them a top notch home-mod in my book (easier to open, clean; quieter and less drafts). Sometimes there are also tax breaks or other local incentives for them.

Pella ain’t what it used to be, but still a good and very high priced option. We have used Anderson (Renewal) for a couple of door sets and were very happy. That house had Anderson windows and they have been great about replacement parts (cranks) even though we were the third owners.
I agree with another poster that replacement windows rarely make economic sense, but if you want less noise or have other reasons to replace, have at it. |

Go full frame replacements if you can wing it financially. Especially if you have frames which are out of square.
It'll probably double the cost vs inserts.

Pella is definitely not what it used to be but their service is solid and overall a good product.. now that i know i would have researched further as Pella is pricey for what you get. i.e. i ended up getting jamb extensions from them as well.. what shit quality paint that was.. i had to re-do the jambs entirely and my painter re-spray them how it should be done. supposedly they come painted from factory to match the windows.. what they came with looked like primer on bare wood, lol.

Are you looking at impact resistant glass or something else? We did impact a few years ago and can share a few thoughts if that's what you are looking at.

We had every window replaced in our house about 7 years ago. Was about $25k since every single one was a custom size. Well worth the investment though. As others have said, spend the $ to go with a reputable brand if you can.
We went with aluminum framed. Dont let the vinyl window guys talk you into how much better vinyl is due to thermal loss. The frame makes up about 1% of the surface area of the window. What really matters is high quality, low e, glass and rock solid sealing between the glass and the frame. Besides, vinyl looks like shit, IMO. |

Ok to follow-up on this.
I went with a company from BJs Wholesale Club. Well Affiliated with them. They are FHIA and they use a local company here in Florida: Custom Window Systems. We went the WindPact Plus series vinyl windows and sliding glass door. WindPact Plus Series Windows and Doors I'm not directly on the water, but if something is going to fly into these new windows, they won't be coming through. That and if a hurricane comes direct, we also have shutters. My wife and I are very excited. The house currently has windows from 99' that are single pane aluminum with no film. Just a sheet of glass. |
