Are 2016-2018 M2 reliable?
Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a '17 M2 (MT). To be honest, always a Japan cars owner, it's my 1st time owning a BMW vehicle. Very excited about it. I want to keep this car low mileage and in pristine condition as much as I can. Truly grateful to find this forum for the M2 so I can learn from you guys. With that said, may I ask for your opinion how reliable the 2016-2018 M2 are? ie. electronics, engine and manual trans? I heard that the n55 engine is very reliable, but what about the other parts of the vehicle? If I maintain it religiously (i.e, on top of the maintenance schedule), can I expect it run smoothly up to e.g. 100k miles? 150k miles? without major repairs? I apologize in advance if my questions appear naive. Still new here in the BMW world. Much appreciated for your insight. Thank you! UPDATE: Someone PM'ed me "Wouldn't it be great if we have a database or spreadsheet of this for reference..?" I just created a spreadsheet so folks can feel free to document issues they observe with their 2016-2018 M2. Just in case people want to share their issues and fixes here. Here is the link to it: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...RfE/edit#gid=0 Last edited by HawaiiShrimp; 08-09-2019 at 12:07 PM.. Reason: Update with shareable spreadsheet |

Had one coil go nuts and messed up a spark plug that threw 2 CEL's - Had a very brief gremlin in the steering column - you would not believe the story - fixed on its own. Had a problem with the horn and a turn signal deal but, this stuff is all very minor - just listing everything I can think of. Have a Dinan Stage 1 tune but the car uses zero oil and hauls ass. |

My 2018 M2 has only had one intermittent problem, right turn signal malfunction. I haven’t bothered to get it fixed yet.

Stock, non-track 2017 with 18,000 miles.
Change oil & filter every 5,000 miles and only use Shell V-Power gas. Had dust shields replaced for free for 'rocks in soda' sound when pebbles would get caught. |

Yes they are. That being said though cars during the warranty period which you are asking about are normally very reliable as that is the point. come 2021 onward you might be better served by the answers about 2016/17+ M2's

2018 LCI here and the only issue was the amplifier going fubar at 18,000 km. Replaced under warranty otherwise car is rock solid.

29k miles on my 2016 and the only issue I've had so far was my aftermarket charge pipe popping off (ironic as I installed it to prevent this from happening). Turns out it was installation error as I didn't tighten the clamp that connects the two pipes together tight enough. Whoops...No issues otherwise though.

Thank you Sir. That is exactly one of the intent of this post. Long term reliability. As the car gets older (5+ years), I'd like to learn from other M2 owners about their M2 reliability. So, I can keep an eye out for all potential issues and repair costs down the road.

Electric water pumps don't seem to be as reliable as mechanical as leaks seem to be more common. Audi/VW has had a hell of a time getting this right and still can't. My Golf R water pump/thermostat housing started to leak and I had to wait almost two months because they were on national backorder due to the amount they have to replace them.

I have an M235 which has the same 6MT and essentially the same N55 minus the better oil pump used in the M2's N55 and a few psi less boost. Mechanically, everything else is the same down to the intercooler. The M2 has a different passive suspension setup too.
Anyway, I've owned my M235 for 3.5 years and 36K miles. I had one CEL pop up shortly after buying the car which was related to winter fuel. BMW reflashed the DME and all was well. No other issues to report on the mechanical and electrical side. I've owned almost entirely Japanese cars over the past 30 years and this is my first german car. It's actually the most reliable one and best put together car I've ever owned. I still don't have a single rattle. With that said, I fully expect some things to start going south within the next 2 years and 20K miles. The last model N55 used in the M2/M235 is a bit beefed up (forged crank rather than cast, better rod bearings, more auxiliary cooling) compared to the other N55s used in all the other BMW models, but there are some common issues with the N55 that may come about at some point after 5 years on the road. They include (typical rates to repair at a shop provided; much cheaper to fix yourself if you're a DIYer): 1) Coil packs. Turbo BMWs are pretty hard on coil packs and expect a few to die, especially if you tune the car. $300-500. 2) Leaking valve cover gasket. $1500-2000. 3) Leaking oil filter housing gasket. $600-900. 4) Failed water pump. $900-1200. 5) Spark plugs every 50K miles or so. More often if you run a tune. $150-300. 6) Broken charge pipe. $900-1,200. 7) Coolant tank to radiator overflow hose. $150-200 8) Oil pan leak (less common). $1000-1400

2018 6MT, 7,500 miles. One CEL from bad gas, otherwise nothing!
