The best phto from this year's Alpine ski season: Verbier in Switzerland from about 5 Kms away on adjacent peak. Canon Mk.2 100-400mm L-II zoom on Canon EoS 5D Mk.III hand-held. Very impressed with the detail, given I was at max zoom and holding it in my hands ....
For ski buffs this is the middle third of a continuous piste running from 2727m (8,947ft) down to the end at 1756m (5,751ft) - a 971m (3,186) vertical drop. Great fun, whether newbie or pro.

It's amazing how sharp that 100-400mm zoom is. The Canon/Nikeon/Sony zooms have gotten so good that you hardly need primes these days. My only primes are my FE 400/f2.8 and FE 80/f1.4, which are obviously special purpose lenses. My kit is FE 12-24/f4, FE 24-105/f4, FE 80/f1.4, FE 100-400/f4.5-5.6 and FE 400/f2.8, mounted on either an a9 or a7RIII.

Thanks Mark,
Story goes, I was so close that I considered taking off the 2.0x teleconverter. I couldn't back up because of a lake. I thought, "If I take the lens off, he'll fly while the camera is apart." So I hung on and battled to get him in the frame. As you might guess, his wings are chopped off in the full extension take-off shot, but I got this. Only cropped to change aspect ration to 5:4. Click on it and go to Flickr, if you want to see full-screen. Huge feather and eye details when seen full-screen.

Notice that I took my whole kit for a long weekend in Florida. When I know there'll be wildlife, I take it all. ThinkTank roller-bag makes it manageable.
