Long Term and Seasonal Wheel + Tire Storage
Hey guys,
Unbeknownst to me I have been storing my old Land Cruiser wheels and tires incorrectly. I am using a tire rack from Amazon like this. Wheel and Tire manufacturers do not recommend this, they recommended wheel and tire combos being hung from individual hangers (even though EVERY photo shows wheels and tires these racks online). How are people storing the following safely on their walls: Seasonal Wheel and Tires x4 Long Term Wheel and Tires x5 (4 Regular and 1 Spare) I am thinking of replacing my normal rack with hangers and using the rack only for tires (as is intended) or using wood to create a shelf that I can stack the wheels and tires on safely vertically. Here is my current storage solution. I have the need to store 9 tires and wheels safely year round. (Land Cruiser wheels, BMW M2 wheels). Thanks, |

Mine are stored like OPs but on the ground, standing next to each other. What is the issue? There's no weight on them?

Apparent flat spots, maybe I'm being dramatic.

There's no weight on them to cause flat spots. If it bothers you turn them a bit every month.

I am not convinced storing tires by standing them up on a rack or even on the floor does any significant damage to the tire. However, I don't work in the auto industry so maybe more knowledgeable people could convince me otherwise, but for now I think it is overly cautious.
Here's my thinking: I've heard that tires can develop flat spots if a car sits around for weeks/months. I'm sure car dealerships even have vehicles sitting around for months that don't get moved. When the average weight of a passenger car is 3000-4000 pounds and assuming equal weight distribution, each tire ends up supporting 800-1000 pounds. People say these flat spots go away with a few minutes of driving and really aren't much to worry about. If a tire develops only temporary flat spots after a 2-ton car sits on them for a month, why should we worry about storing them uninstalled when they weigh just 50 pounds or less? |

Yeah, I'm 90% sure storing them the way you are is fine.

There fine. Also no need to put the car on jack stands to store or wood under the wheels.

Car is too low to fit a low profile jack under the front (in response to the 2x6's) (Sorry if your response was sarcastic haha!)

most tire places store them in warehouses stacked on top of each other.. been doing that for years and never had an issue - I figure they know tires better than I do so it can't be bad

I store my spare wheels and tires in a vacuum sealed chamber. Each individually suspended with lint free ultra soft twine, wrapped meticulously in goose feather lined bags made of Alcantara.
It's the only way to do it. /s |
