Best way to remove stock shims from the rear brake pads?

Picked up some CarboTech pads for my new 2NH brakes and the fronts seem fine, but I'm getting a massive knock/thud when I use the brakes for the first time going backwards, then for the first time going forwards. I'm reading that, even though CarboTech says not to use the stock shims, people have been doing it for years with great success.

Now the problem is removing the stock shims. I'm thinking heat gun + putty knife + screwdriver? Have you done this? Your thoughts?

The thud is common with aftermarket pads. The cold pads move somewhat in the caliper when you brake for the first time in the opposite direction. I've always thought that this was to allow for expansion with a hot pad and backing plate, but not sure. The shims will not make the situation better as the pad is moving in the direction the rotor is moving.

Patience is key. Have done it before.

I didn't heat mine. From memory used some dental floss as a saw to cut through the glue.

I have a friend with the same pads and rear shims and he has no thud. I figured I could try it at least.

I looked for a YouTube tutorial on how to remove the Brembo shim, but there wasn't any, so I made my own that I'll post later. It's simple really.

1. Heat the back of the pad up with a heat gun until it's warm to the touch.
2. Use a box knife on both sides to release the adhesive enough to get a small screwdriver in between the pad and shim.
3. Stick the screwdriver in at various spots until it pops off.
4. Use an eraser wheel (by hand) to rub the excess adhesive off of the shim.
