Don't bore yourself with a car that plows (not talking about snow either). M2 with X-ice3 Xi3/Blizzak WS80/Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 provides confident fun.

I made the suggestion for a winter beater so his car won't be rock polished by the end of one season. That could be RWD with snows as well.

If new to RWD, find a very large empty parking lot without light poles in the rain or snow (preferably snow) and just slide the car around. Try throwing everything at it with all nannies off and try low and high speed turn braking and drifting.
Everything is exaggerated and will help you feel how the car will behave when upset or losing traction. Best learning tool there is I think for first time RWD drivers. |

If you have to daily it I would pick the RS3. To be a broken record - snows are needed regardless. We have too many snow/ice covered hills in the mountains where AWD + snow tires are the way to go. Now if you only stay in Boulder and don't need to leave the city often I wouldn't really worry about it, but if you go up the hills then get the RS3.

Another Canadian here. Echo what most have said. If you can afford a winter beater, just do it. Peace of mind is worth it.
WRX is a great winter car with the right tires. I had an '04. Loved that car. AWD bulletproof Boxer. Also has 4 doors if you need it...and you won't be that upset if you stuff it into a snow bank!! |
