Autocross!

I decided to take the M2 to scare some cones on Saturday, out at Front Range Airport, just east of Denver.

I made sure to switch all the nannies off. OMFG, this thing is so easy to drive. It's very well balanced, and each run I'd push it harder, expecting it to try to bite me. Never happened. You wanna drift? You can drift. You want tidy? You can be tidy.

One run, I went through the finish lights more or less sideways. Meanwhile I was thinking, "in half a second, the rears will gently grab, I'll dial out a little steering, and that'll be it."

Sure enough, half a second later, the rear tucked nicely back into line.

Pardon the shaky video, I was using an iPhone with a cheezy suction cup mount on the inside of the windshield.

I used the M-timer app. Fun, but at least for auto-x, you can't do comparisons or overlay video.

Not the M timer app.

This is a Bluetooth dongle that attaches to the car and gives you all the data from the car.

Hmmm. Where'd you find it for that? Turner had it for $400, and it said it wasn't compatible with the F87.

Works on my 2011 1M and 2013 x1

1M Tex uses it in his M2 and is who showed it to me.

I got mine on eBay .. $200 NEW from a seller with 3000 sales. When it arrived it Came from a dealer in Ohio and it came in about 4 days.

Check for android vs iPhone part numbers to make sure you get the right item.

Der Mineralring- circa 30 acres - no light poles. Crazy amounts of runoff area.

I called turner on it, they actually list 2 of the same (same part number) and one around $250 and the other $4xx....and they said the $4xx is a mistake.

I do suspect the $4xx one actually includes the phone windshield mounts etc plus the dongle. The Dongle alone is $2xx depending on where u find them.

I just picked up one today and it does work on the F87. Played around with settings etc in the garage, but will drive/video it tomorrow.

Is the dongle as big as it looks? Afraid of knocking it w/my foot/leg getting in and out of the car or that not a consideration?

I thought I was the first

Taken the M2 out autocrossing twice here in the SouthEast and I have to say I love the car. Coming from an STX BRZ into the M2 proved to be quite easy as it handles like a BRZ with more power (and weight).

Sharing a video from my fast run last Sunday.

Classing for Stock M2

Tentatively I've gotten word that the classing will 'likely' be BS, but nothing is confirmed yet from the SEB. I've already got letters and results in that point strongly in favor of a BS classing. I also have word they will be reviewing that classing tonight, but it might not come in time to be able to run any M2's at the 2016 Solo Nationals.

*scratch that.. next week.. they'll review it next wednesday*

Liking the DCT? Any regrets at not getting the 6MT?
Do you drive the DCT mostly in the manual mode?

Yep, I really like the DCT. No regrets. I still race a car with a manual, and believe me, if I could afford to put a sequential box in it, I'd do it in a second. The only time I'm ever in auto mode, is occasionally in the supermarket parking lot.

B-Street

From the August fastrack:

#18188 2016 BMW M2 Class

SCCA Fastrack News August 2016 Page 2
It is beyond the date to class this car for National competition in 2016. The SAC anticipates classing the car after the 2016 Solo National Championships so that we can utilize the 12 month rule (3.2) if required. For regional competition, the SAC recommends running this car in BS.

Looks like both the M2 and Focus RS will likely be in BS with the C5 FRC for 2017.

Anyone think the port installed m performance coilovers are b street legal?

Is there any provision for camber adjustment on the front of the car (like pulling the alignment pins on the front of the E92)?

Looks kind of pushy in the low speed sweepers and higher speed slaloms. Stock tires and alignment?

I really need to get on here and look at posts more often, sorry for the delay! Took the car out again last Sunday and again it was great. Stock everything but RE-71 tires. As for the pushy statement that may just be how I was driving but the car is not pushy in the least unless your steering inputs are too fast. If anything the car bites very well and it's problem is throttle induced oversteer (not a problem really)

The only time you can feel the weight on the car is under heavy braking before technical elements and I had a few instances last weekend of overbraking the ABS system and have slight front wheel lockups. I'll work on uploading and linking a new video tonight from last weekend.

As promised:

I can speak to all of this since my wife and I are working closely with the Solo Advisory Board in an attempt to get the M2 officially classed for 2017; we have a vested interest in the outcome and want to make sure the car is classed fairly and competitively. As of right now any port installed option that alters the performance characteristics of the car (including lip spoilers and diffusers) are not allowed in the Street Rules. There was some discussion of this as they can be ordered from the factory with those options but because they do not roll of the assembly line with the parts installed they are not legal in Street. If you opt to have the suspension changes they would most likely put you in STU. Motion Control offers a strut replacement for the F87 currently that would be a great option if you were looking at staying in street.

As for pulling the alignment pins on the strut tower to give yourself more front camber that is allowed. Falls under Section 13.8 Part E of the SCCA Rule book.
Quote:
If offered by the manufacturer for a particular model and year, the use of shims, special bolts, removal of material to enlarge mounting holes, and similar methods are allowed and the resulting alignment settings are permitted even if outside the normal specification or range of specifications recommended by the manufacturer. If enlarging mounting holes is specifically authorized but no material removal limits are specified, material removal is restricted to the amount.
