I've been watching a few, ok too many, YouTube videos.

In one the fellow was testing different ceramic coatings to see how well they held up. His methodology was to hit the coatings with harsher and harsher chemicals. Well the final chemical he used was IronX which strip almost all of the ceramic coating that was left.

For my wheels, I use Sonax wheel cleaner which I'm assuming has a similar chemical in it b/c it turns pink when applied.

So while waiting for my M2C to arrive, I purchased a set of BMW 763 M and some GYEON Rim.

My question is...If I apply the ceramic coating to the wheels and brake calipers will the Sonax strip it off?

what ceramic coating products were they testing in the videos you watched? True ceramic coats or "ceramic" coats like a spray on wax?

The true coats shouldn't be stripped but the "ceramic" sprays definitely will. Those aren't durable at all

You were right, see told you I watched too many videos. They were Meguiar's Hybrid Ceramic Wax VS P&S Bead Maker VS Adam's Ceramic Spray Coating. So they can't be expected to last.

Though will a product like Sonax wheel cleaner "significantly" diminish the life of a DYI product like GYEON Rim?

Hmm, interesting theory. I've had my wheels ceramic coated with Carpro Cquartz (4 coats of it) and it's like it's not even there when I wash the wheels. I wonder if it's a chemical from one of the automatic car washes I go to that stripped it. Or the 2-3 times I used Black Magic No Scrub Wheel Cleaner on them.

I've also had my windows treated with Carpro Flyby Forte and that lasted only a few months. I've been theorizing it's the BMW washer fluid that degraded the coating. Because it's only degraded where my wipers hit. And my 2007 Saab was treated with the same coating at the same time and still is going strong, but I use RainX washer fluid in it.

Curious.. Why bother using harsh chemicals if you're ceramic coating your wheels. Shouldn't the dust just rinse off?

What i've found with my own ceramic coated wheels is that they make cleaning easier but they don't prevent brake dust and grime from sticking to the wheels. You don't need to use a powerful brake cleaner every time you wash your wheels unless you're neglecting them for weeks.

I use regular car wash shampoo weekly and my wheels remain easy to clean and water still beads.

It is possible for the contaminants to embed in the wheels even if you have them coated so perhaps your wheels need some iron remover for a thorough decon wash and you should see the water beading effects of the ceramic coat again.

over time all cleaners will take down the ceramic coating, best way to deal with it, is to clean as normal but change it up use ceramic friendly products.

plan on coating your rims every year or so. this is what we tell our customers as the wheels will take on a ton of abuse from braking --> heat ---> dirt and dust --> and cleaning.

I was very skeptical coating wheels and thought it a complete waste of time b/c in my experience the hot metallic pieces from the pads melt into the clear coat. Even so I decided to try Gyeon Rim as I had nothing to loose. I don't drive the car all year long so my experience may not be typical.

When I wash the car the brake dust washes off with normal car wash. No more Sonex required. This alone makes the effort well worth with. If you do this yourself it's amazing how rough the new wheels are and how smooth they are after the coating is applied. It literally fills tiny pores in the finish.

When it gets a bit warmer I'll take the wheels off and have a closer look but I'm a very happy customer.

At the same time I applied Gyeon Pure (1 step) to the paint and again it makes cleaning the car a breeze. This was a brand new car straight from the dealer. I can't imagine correcting the paint and applying a 2 step. Props to the detailers that do this work, you deserve your fee.

Since the two products worked so well, I decided to try Gyeon View on the windows though my past experience with RainX has not been very positive. I will continue to use this on the side and rear windows but not the front window. The bugs seems to stick a bit better and the wipers and wiper fluid do not remove them. Though when I wash the car they come right off.

So 2 1/2 out of three isn't too bad.

I used Gyeon rim on my TE37. I did 2 coats and find that not everything washes off easily with just soap and pressure washing. I have to use a wheel woolie to get some parts clean. Part of this issue is most likely do to the textured paint on the wheel but I was expecting a little better results. I did coat the lug nuts as well and they seem to get clean with the power washer though.
