Back to stock exhaust

Hello everybody I just went from an mpe to stock exhaust on my 2018 m2 and it is a night and day difference for the better(in my opinion). I picked up a gently used stock exhaust for a very good price from a fellow forum member. Now the exhaust note is that perfect, tasteful, 6 cylinder sound BMW is known for. With the mpe, it was just loud all the time with earsplitting drone from ~ 2700 to ~ 3500 rpm in all gears. The lack of resonators allows resonance at a frequency I cannot bear and It was incredibly awful on the highway even with sonic filters.

Periodically I would have to down shift into 5th gear on the highway to avoid aural fatigue. Now, no more sonic filters needed and no more aural fatigue, I can hear my music on the highway and I can drive with my windows down in the city. Also, I no longer startle children and the elderly with my exhaust startup cacophony. I was thinking of adding insulation and all that, but swapping exhaust was an easier fix.

In conclusion, for all those people who find the drone unbearable or are sensitive to that particular frequency, swapping back to stock exhaust fixes it completely. I have not noticed any acceleration differences either. I do not track it however, I daily it. I am 1000% saitisfied!

Good for you!

I never understood the appeal of a loud, obnoxious exhaust..

I mean, there must be a more civil way of letting the world know you have a small penis.

Heh. I like the deep growl of the MPE but it is a bit on the loud side even with the flaps closed. I'm reluctant to get a downpipe because that would push it over my noise tolerance level.

You must have not coded out or bypassed ASD. That is the source of your drone. My MPE with bypassed ASD has zero drone. And it isn’t very load at highway speeds.

I think you have 1-of-1, drone free MPE.

Everyone knows the M Performance exhaust is barely audible - from space..

Sound is pretty subjective as everyone's ears are a bit different. Some of us are probably more tone deaf/noise tollerant than others.

Get rid of ASD, and you'll be able to hear the real sound of your M2, with or without the stuck exhaust.

ASD bypass was the 1st thing I did in hopes of killing the drone. ASD actually makes the drone a little less noticable. I think I must be sensitive to that particular resonant frequency. I can't stand heavy bass either. I understand some people dont hear the drone as much, but I can't stand it.

Each to their own I guess. My "obnoxiously loud" catless system is my favourite part of the car! Sonorous N55 notes to make my day that much more special.

He's on shitty Seattle roads, can't hear the drone over tire noise

I got the ASD off and droning is tolerable with the flaps closed but it's there.

I do a decent amount of highway driving and the drone around 3000 rpm in 6th gear was too much for me. There is still all the road noise which is substantial, but that damn drone is gone.

when picking an exhaust its very important to ask vendors who heard all the different systems in person for an honest opinion. Some want loud and aggressive , don't care about drone. others want deep tone with no drone,etc...
if done right, the exhaust mod is going to become your favorite favorite part of the car

Do you like the ASD delete? I havent done this yet but it sounds like the final step aside from some black exhaust tips.

It was the first thing I did and afterwards wondered why they use it in the first place. It sounds like the engine is all around you. Once you delete it or code it out you realize how artificial the sound actually is.

Gets rid of some faux drone, too, that gives you a headache after a cpl hours of driving.

Yup, I love that setup. My highway commutes are so much more pleasurable now. I no longer have to deal with ear fatigue and I can hear music. Its wonderful. I like a quieter, more tasteful exhaust note. In stock form, I feel that the m2 has an aggressive yet tasteful exhaust note.
