Gold Wheel paint

I was washing the car today and noticed this significant chip on the wheel. Obviously, I'm not thrilled, I have 1,000 miles on the car of normal driving. I don't remember hearing something hit the wheel hard. I had the Orbit gray previously and tracked the car multiple times and I don't remember seeing a chip like that. Is this gold paint more susceptible to chips?

It's probably too early to tell if it's more susceptible to chips, but I'd say probably not, the company that makes the wheels for BMW is a wheel company, that's all they do. The big problem with Frozen Gold is that it's a tri-stage paint, so it's literally unmatchable.

Not that I know for sure, but the detail shop I use said they have a wheel company that claimed to have matched it.

I KNOW my repair sources couldn't match Orbit Grey so I bought a new one when I damaged mine.

I had a shop close by that was able to match the orbit gray but it took them time to get it

Orbit is a single-stage paint, but if you don't have the code, it's still incredibly hard to match. Possible, but incredibly hard.

Frozen Gold isn't like that at all. The wheel is painted silver, then clear gold (to let the silver come though on the edges), then pearl on top. Even the manufacturer can't match it exact from batch to batch sometimes.

I would imagine it's possible to get decently close if you paint all 4 wheels at once, but not a single wheel.

I have a similar chip on one of my rears as well. It think the paint is a little more prone to chipping. I got it with less than 1000 miles on the car. I have 2200 miles now and forgot about the chip until you brought it up!

It would be nice if there was Touch up paint, but no big deal. Keep driving until all wheels are really chipped, then refinish them or buy new ones!

It's worth mentioning that painted wheels are definitely more prone to chipping than powder-coated wheels, and tri-stage paints can't be powder-coated to give the same look as that of painting. There also seems to be some correlation between thicker paint (tri-coat) chipping larger than single stage or powder-coat. I suppose it's the price you pay for such beautiful wheels. They're more like jewelry than wheels I think.

Ugh. Sorry to hear about that. If you end up replacing the wheel, there are two different versions of the 763M wheel in the sizes we need:

Front:

36-11-8-097-287: this wheel is stamped with ///M Performance
36-10-8-089-338: this is the wheel that came with our cars -- no ///M Performance stamp

Rear:

36-11-8-097-288: this wheel is stamped with ///M Performance
36-10-8-089-343: this is the wheel that came with our cars -- no ///M Performance stamp

Just a heads up so you don't accidentally order the wrong wheel.

Here's what the stamped version looks like:

I don't know how you found the part numbers for the non-MPerformance wheels. I need a replacement and didn't want the stamped ones. Can you share the part numbers for the black CS ones as well? I have searched on their site and can't find them either. Thanks for sharing...super helpful!!

Then we should each buy a spare set so as to ensure long term integrity of the paint job is retained on the wheels

Is there touch up paint for any of the BMW frozen colors? May have to make gold touch up paint by mixing a few colors.

Forgive me, but yes. With a car of this caliber I'd not only buy a spare set of OE wheels, I'd probably buy a single front and single rear in case something happens.

I reached out to getBMWparts for the part numbers for the gold wheels. I contacted them again about the black wheels and will post when I hear back!

I don't think it is forgiveness you should be offered but rather praise

I heard back from getBMWparts. Here are the part numbers for the OE black wheels (no ///M Performance stamp). I'll put all this in a separate thread so it's easier to find for people looking for the black wheels:

Front: 36-10-8-089-344
Rear 36-10-8-089-345

I'd confirm this before ordering since getBMWparts doesn't show a picture, list the wheel size, or mention style 763M (yet). But they know what they're doing there, so I'd be pretty confident this is correct.

my wheels don't look remotely this gold. They are basically silver in comparison

Bronzitbeige looks more silver than gold in most light....just sold one and had detailed it. Pictures are difficult, and I haven't seen the gold CS wheels in person, but I think bronzitbeige would be more silver. Maybe we are both wrong and it's the exact same paint.......

Bumping this to see if anyone has had success repairing paint on frozen gold wheels and / or if any else has found paint chipping. Have both rears with chips. Starting the journey on repair vs. replace.

I just noticed a chip on 1 of my wheels, I have the oem black mperformance 763m wheel. Don't think it's avoidable if a rock hits the wheel. Mine is easy to repair though, vs the gold color.

I kerb my gold wheel a little bit, end up buy a new one, I don't think they can perfectly refurbished to match the finish (still in box not replace yet, keep using the kerb damage wheel till more marks on &#129315
